scientific name

Megaglossa Rondani, 1869a: 9
status

311. Megaglossa Rondani, 1869a: 9 , 32.

TYPE SPECIES: Musca seminationis Fabricius, 1775 , automatic [by designation of the same name (by monotypy) for Platystoma Meigen, 1803 ].

CURRENT STATUS: Unnecessary new replacement name for Platystoma Meigen, 1803 ; junior synonym of Platystoma Meigen, 1803 [ teste Soós (1984b: 40) ].

FAMILY: PLATYSTOMATIDAE .

REMARKS: Rondani (1869a: 32) did not explicitly replace Platystoma Meigen, 1803 with Megaglossa . Instead, he proposed Megaglossa as the name for the generic concept of “ Platystoma Mgn. (1803) Macq. Wlk. etc. Trupanea p. Schr. — Dyctia p. Fabr. — Musca p. Rossi. Hesyquillia? Desv.” and provided a footnote explaining that Platystoma was also used by Klein, 1753 [which, being a pre- Linnaean name not used after 1758 as an available name, does not enter into nomenclature and cannot be a senior homonym]. The wording quoted above has been interpreted by subsequent catalogers as Rondani explicitly proposing Megaglossa Rondani, 1869 as a new replacement name for Platystoma Meigen, 1803 and we have chosen to follow this. The alternative interpretation, that Megaglossa Rondani, 1869 was proposed as a separate genus and not as a new replacement name, would render Platystoma umbrarum Meigen, 1826 as the type species for Megaglossa by original designation of Rondani (1869a: 9). Platystoma umbrarum Meigen, 1826 is treated by Soós (1984b: 45) in “doubtful species” of Platystomatidae .
