CURRENT STATUS: Unjustified emendation of Brachypalpus Macquart, 1851 ; preoccupied by Brachipalpus Rondani, 1845 ; junior synonym of Palpibracus Rondani, 1863 . New synonymy.

REMARKS: Two nomenclatural acts occurred in Rondani (1863: 35) that affect the fate of the name Brachypalpus Macquart, 1851 : (1) Brachipalpus Rondani, 1863 , by being one of two or more names that have similar spelling changes from “y” to “i” in the same work, is an emendation of Brachypalpus Macquart, 1851 ; (2) in the line immediately above Brachipalpus, Rondani specifically proposes the new replacement name Palpibracus for the muscid name Brachypalpus Macquart, 1851 (the latter being preoccupied by Brachypalpus Macquart, 1834 in Syrphidae ). Brachipalpus Rondani, 1863 is preoccupied by Brachipalpus Rondani, 1845 , thus Palpibracus Rondani, 1863 is the valid name for Brachypalpus Macquart, 1851 .
