24. Anoplomerus Rondani, 1856: 141 View in CoL .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Musca notata Fabricius, 1781 (as “ Hydrophorus Notatus Meig. ”).
TYPE SPECIES: Musca notata Fabricius, 1781 (as “ Hydrophorus Notatus Meig. ”), by original designation.
CURRENT STATUS: Preoccupied by Guérin-Méneville, 1844; senior (but invalid) synonym of Scellus Loew, 1857 [ teste Hurley (1995: 139) ].
FAMILY: DOLICHOPODIDAE .
REMARKS: Previous catalogers (e.g., Dyte, 1975: 241; Dyte & Smith, 1980: 455; Pollet et al., 2004: 53; Yang et al., 2006: 246) gave the type species of Anoplomerus as Musca regius Fabricius, 1805 , by original designation. This is the species that is printed in Rondani (1856: 141; as “ Hydrophorus Regius Fabr. ”) and is currently considered a member of the genus Liancalus Loew, 1857 ( Yang et al., 2006: 247). Rondani (1861e: 11) noted that both his Anoplomerus ( Rondani, 1856) and its new replacement name Anoplopus ( Rondani, 1857) were preoccupied and placed them as synonyms of Liancalus Loew, 1857 , which was the taxonomic treatment followed by those previous catalogers. However, the errata in Rondani (1856: unpaginated last page) instructs that the type species of Anoplomerus Rondani, 1856 and Hydrophorus Fallén, 1823 (both listed on page 141) should be switched. By doing so, the type species for Anoplomerus becomes “ Hydrophorus Notatus Meig. ”. Meigen never described a dolichopodid named notatus nor did he list any species by that name by another author that would fit a hydrophorine. The only species that fits this description, to which Rondani could have been referring, and that occurs in Italy, is Musca notata Fabricius, 1781 . Although Pollet et al. (2004: 53) stated Hurley (1995) as a reference that treated the synonymy of Anoplomerus with Scellus as an error by Rondani (1856), Hurley in fact clearly (and correctly) treated Anoplomerus Rondani, 1856 with the type species as “ Hydrophorus notatus Meigen ” [= Musca notata Fabricius, 1781 ] and its replacement name Anoplopus Rondani, 1857 as junior synonyms of Scellus Loew, 1857 . The synonymization of Anoplomerus and Anoplopus under Scellus by Hurley (1995) is followed here and keeps the current separate generic concepts of Scellus and Liancalus intact.
