Diagnosis. Both male and female genitalia of this species are similar to those of S. sarapis Malicky & Chantaramongkol 2006 described from Thailand. Males belonging to S. argentatus are distinguishable from S. sarapis by the following characteristics: In S. argentatus , segment X is curved downward at the middle in lateral view, but it is nearly straight in S. sarapis . The lower branch of each inferior appendage is slender and horn-shaped in lateral view in S. argentatus , but short and triangular in S. sarapis . Additionally, the apicoventral lobe of segment IX is spatula-shaped in ventral view in S. argentatus , but it is triangular with a pointed apex in S. sarapis . In females, each dorsolateral margin of segment X is straight in dorsal view in S. argentatus , but curved outward midway in S. sarapis .

Adult. Head and body yellowish brown. Forewings each 6.1–6.9 mm long (n = 10) in male, 5.5–6.7 mm long (n = 12) in female, covered by golden hairs with longitudinal silver lines and spots composed of the scales margined with black hairs. Silver line present on each scape, maxillary palp, lateral and median lines of head, mesonotum, and dorsal and ventral margins of legs. Wing venation typical for genus, but base of sectoral vein of each hindwing connecting with media (M) in some specimens ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 Aa).

Male genitalia. Segment IX longitudinally short dorsally, long ventrally with triangular sclerotized lobe posteriorly in lateral view; apicoventral lobe spatulate, subtruncate, produced posterad in ventral view. Preanal appendages clavate, with many short setae. Segment X thick basally, abruptly thinner about basal 1/4, evenly curved downward at middle in lateral view, twisted asymmetrically in dorsal view, acute at apex. Inferior appendages each divided into two branches; upper branch forming longitudinal upper and lower lobes, with tiny triangular lobe basally; lower branch slender, horn-like, acute at apex. Phallicata abruptly curved downward at middle, slightly sclerotized, with deep groove for guiding segment X.

Female genitalia. Segment IX rectangular in lateral view, with darkly pigmented round lobe posterolaterally. Segment X plate-like, depressed at apex in dorsal view, with pair of small round humps basolaterally, slender and slightly sinuate near tip in lateral view. Preanal appendages semi-oval in dorsal and lateral views, with many short setae. Lamellae oval in lateral view, each with longitudinal ridge laterally and with small triangular lobe bearing few short setae and two long setae posteromesally. Gonopod plate triangular in lateral view, convex and round posteriorly in ventral view. Spermathecal sclerite oval in ventral view, darkly pigmented, slightly concave on its middle.

Immature stages. Kuwayama (1934) described the egg, egg mass, larva, and pupa of this species in detail.

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), Russia (Far East), North Korea, China.

Japanese name. Ginboshi-tsutsu-tobikera.
