Setodes pseudofurcatulus sp. nov.

( Figs. 8A–8G View FIGURE 8 )

Setodes View in CoL sp. 1: Nozaki & Nakamura 2002, 178, Honshu (Hiroshima); Nozaki & Nakamura 2005, 226, Honshu (Shimane).

Diagnosis. Both the males and females are similar to those of S. furcatulus Martynov 1935 described from Far East Russia. Males of S. pseudofurcatulus differ by the shape of the paramere spines: Unbifurcated in S. pseudofurcatulus , but bifurcated in S. furcatulus . In females, the rectum in segment IX is membranous and narrowed in S. pseudofurcatulus , but sclerotized and bulged in S. furcatulus ( Fig. 8H View FIGURE 8 ).

Adult. Specimens in alcohol. Head and body very pale. Forewings each 4.3–5.4 mm long (n = 12) in male, 4.2–5.3 mm (n = 5) in female; venation mostly typical for genus, but base of sectoral vein (s) connecting with the media (M) in each hind wing.

Male genitalia. Segment IX longitudinally short dorsally with single papilla bearing 5–6 long setae, long ventrally with many strong setae. Segment X relatively small, semi-trapezoidal in lateral view, U-shaped in dorsal view. Preanal appendages long, clavate, each with many short setae. Inferior appendages each tri-branched; upper branch vertical, forming small round lobe in lateral view, with longitudinal lobe extending inward and tapering to acute apex; middle branch short, forming small triangular lobe; lower branch horizontal, horn-shaped, with many short setae. Phallicata evenly bent downward at about basal 1/4, round apically in lateral view, with large round hump dorsally. Paramere spines arising from sclerotized endotheca, extending obliquely dorsocaudad in basal 1/ 3rd, abruptly bent downward about 90° midway, apical half sinuate with acute apex in lateral view.

Female genitalia. Segment IX longitudinally short dorsally, long ventrally in lateral view, with pair of reticulation areas anteroventrally; pair of large posteroventral lobes round apically in ventral view, with many tiny setae. Segment X triangular in lateral view, pointed at apex, rectangular in dorsal view, slightly excised posteriorly and round posterolaterally. Rectum membranous, anal opening present on ventral surface of segment X. Preanal appendages triangular in dorsal and lateral views, each with many short setae. Lamellae knife-shaped, each with semicircular concavity in lateral view and with small lobe bearing 6–7 short setae posteromesally. Pair of leafshaped lobes situated beneath lamellae. Posteroventral lobe of each pleuron IX arising from reticulation area, recurved and projecting posterad, round at apex in ventral view. Spermathecal sclerite teardrop-shaped in ventral view, exposed posteriorly about 1/4 distance from tip; genital chamber large, bell-shaped in ventral view, extending into segment VIII.

Immature stages. Unknown.

Etymology. The specific epithet indicates that this species is similar to S. furcatulus .

Distribution. Japan (Honshu (western)).

Japanese name. Nise-futamata-seto-tobikera.

Holotype. ♂ (in alcohol), Yasaka-dam , Ogata-cho , Otake-shi, Hiroshima, Honshu, Japan, 34°2’N, 132°2’E, 28.vii.2000, S. Nakamura leg. (CBM-ZI 166054). GoogleMaps

Paratypes. 3♀, same data as holotype (CBM-ZI 166055–166057) GoogleMaps . 12♂, Ouchiyama-gawa , Kashiwano , Taikicho, Mie, Honshu, Japan. 20.vi.1999, H. Morita (CBM-ZI 166058–166069).

Other specimens examined. Shimane: 4♂, Takatsu-gawa, Kanda-cho, Masuda-shi, 29.vii.2000, S. Nakamura ; 1♀, ibid, 28.ix.2000, S. Nakamura ; 1♀, Takatsu-gawa, Mukaiyokota-cho, Masuda-shi, 28.ix.2000, S. Nakamura; 1♂, Takatsu-gawa, Yasudomi-cho, Masuda-shi, 27.ix.2000, S. Nakamura.

Specimens examined of Setodes furcatulus : 4♀, Khabarovsky krai, Bikin River (Ussuri R. basin), 22.viii.2003, T. Tiunova.

Remarks. This species belongs to the Setodes gutika Species Group ( Schmid 1987) since morphological characteristics of male genitalia are consistent with those of this group. One exception is the presence of unbifurcated paramere spines.
