( Figs. 33 View FIGURE 33 A–D, 52D–F)
Diagnostic remarks. A slender, green katydid ( Fig. 33C View FIGURE 33 ) that can be identified by the extreme development of the male 10 th abdominal tergite, which forms a long, downcurved process that surpasses the cerci and subgenital plate ( Figs. 33A, B View FIGURE 33 ). The cerci are simple, incurved, and ending in a small, sharp spine. The ovipositor is long and pointed, with a very fine serration on the edges of the valvulae ( Fig. 33D View FIGURE 33 ).
Bioacoustics. The call of C. amplectens is a series of widely spaced syllables, produced at the rate of 2 syllables/s; mean syllable duration is 0.0241 s (SD=0.012565, n=10); the peak frequency of the call is 22.3–25.2 kHz ( Figs. 52 View FIGURE 52 D–F).
Distribution and natural history. C. amplectens was described from an unknown location in Mozambique ( Schaum 1853) and was subsequently recorded from Zambia, Tanzania ( Ragge 1980), and South Africa (material in SANC). In Gorongosa it is an uncommon species, found only during the rainy season, between December and March.
Measurements (1 male, 1 female). body w/wings: male 38, female 44; body w/o wings: male 24, female 22; pronotum: male 5, female 5; tegmen: male 29, female 36; hind femur: male 20, female 25; ovipositor: 13 mm.
