var. lowianum

Heterotypic synonyms: Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. var. concolor Rolfe, Gard. Chron. , ser. 3, 10: 187, 1891. Type:—ORIGIN UNKNOWN (? Myanmar). Cult. Eastwood s.n. (holotype: K) [fide Du Puy & Cribb 2007: 207].

Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. var. superbissimum L.Linden , Lindenia 6: 19, 1893. Type:— MYANMAR. Without locality: cult. Linden s.n. (holotype: not located).

Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. var. flaveolum L.Linden , Lindenia 13: 43, t. 572, 1897. Type:—ORIGIN UNKNOWN (? Myanmar). Cult. Linden s.n. (holotype: not located). [type fide Du Puy & Cribb 2007: 207].

Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. var. viride Warner ex B.S.Williams, Orchid Album 11: t. 527, 1897. Type :— MYANMAR. Without locality: cult. Smee s.n. (lectotype: illustration in this reference, designated by Du Puy & Cribb 2007: 207) .

Specimens examined:—? MYANMAR. Types. SHAN. Hopang District: 1525 m, Apr 1938, Dickason & Ohn Tui 9220 ( AMES); same loc., 1830 m, 17 Apr 1940, Dickason 9710 ( AMES). WITHOUT LOCALITY. Types; 1877, cult., without collector s.n. ( E), det. D. J. Du Puy; Boxall s.n. ( K); Parish 361 (not located), fide Parish (1883: 197); 1220 m, 9 Apr 1913, Kingdon-Ward 206 ( E, K); cult. Mamyo Bot. Gard. ex Bogg s.n. ( K); without collector s.n. ( AMES). Reported from Yangon Region by Kress et al. (2003: 71) and from Putao District in Kachin State by Saw Lwin (2007: 247 & 255), but we have not seen material from these areas.

Distribution:— Myanmar, Thailand and southwestern China.

Note:— Sheet W-R 44989 is possibly the type of this species .

var. kalawense (Colyear) Govaerts, World Checklist Seed Pl. 3 (1): 21, 1999.

Basionym: Cymbidium grandiflorum Griff. var. kalawense Colyear, Orchid Rev. 42: 248, 1934. Type:— MYANMAR. Shan State: Taunggyi District , cult. Colyear s.n. (holotype: CAL?) .

Heterotypic synonyms: Cymbidium iansonii Rolfe, Orchid Rev. 8: 191, 1900. Cyperorchis iansonii (Rolfe) Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 20: 109, 1924. Cymbidium lowianum (Rchb.f.) Rchb.f. var. iansonii (Rolfe) P.J.Cribb & Du Puy, Kew Bull. 40: 432, 1985. Type:— MYANMAR. Without locality: cult. Low s.n. (holotype: K).

Specimens examined:— SHAN. Taunggyi District : type. WITHOUT LOCALITY. Type; cult. Glasnevin Bot. Gard. s.n. ( K); cult. RBG Kew s.n. ( K) .

Distribution:— Myanmar and southwestern China.

Note:— Du Puy & Cribb (2007: 211) admitted that this seems to intergrade with the typical variety, so perhaps it should not be recognized.
