This large species has a black or dark brown ground color and may have reddish or brown transversal bands ( Dixon et al. 1993, Savage 2002). This species may be
separated from its sympatric congeners by having 10 rows of dorsal scales with the paravertebral scales keeled (12 rows in Chironius exoletus and C. carinatus ), by having its dorsum black, or brown with transversal bands (dor- sally green in C. exoletus and yellowish or olive ground color with 2 broad reddish brown stripes in C. carinatus ).
