Trichotaenia Rivalier, 1958 (Rev. Fr. Entom. 14: 340)
Cassola (1983) revised this genus and Schüle (2011a) provided an identification key for all species of this Afrotropical genus. It is represented in Angola by two species. Although previous authors (Boheman 1860; Cassola & Bouyer 2011) included Angola in the distribution of Trichotaenia tereticollis , we did not find any specific record for this country in the literature.
Trichotaenia pseudosuturalis (W. Horn, 1914) (Arch. Naturgesch. 79 A11: 21)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Bihe ( Angola), 1♀, SDEI.
—Bié (=Cuito) (BIÉ) (234) (Wellman & Horn 1908 sub Cicindela suturalis ).
— Angola (without locality) (Ferreira 1965 sub Cicindela pseudosuturalis ). Remarks. A species restricted to Angola and D. R. of the Congo (Werner 2000b). Cassola (1983) redescribed
the species based on a female syntypus (SDEI) from Katanga. Welman & Horn (1908) wrote that the species was
“taken in short grass, after most Cicindelidae had disappeared”.
Trichotaenia suturata (W. Horn, 1915) (Wytsman Gen. Ins. Cic.: 277) (= suturalis Putzeys, 1880 )
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Huilla (without locality) ( Angola), 1 ♂, MLZA.
—Huilla (without locality) (Putzeys 1880 sub Dromica suturalis ).
—Capelongo (HUILA) (= Kapelongo) (339) to Dongo (HUILA) (= N’Dongo), not Benguela (Fleutiaux, 1922 sub Ophryodera ignipennis ).
—Sangevé (HUILA) (= Sangeve; =Sangueve) (300) (Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956 sub Cicindela suturata ). —Bimbi (=Bimbe) (HUAMBO) (210) (Ferreira 1965 sub Cicindela suturata ).
New localities reported: 75 km N Caconda (near Cuima) and 75 km NE Caconda (HUAMBO) (280); 10 km S Caluquembe, 20 km NE Cacula (HUILA) (317) (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Remarks. An endemic tiger beetle species of Angola found throughout the provinces of Huambo and Huila. The holotype deposited in the MLZA of Lisboa was destroyed by the catastrophic fire in 1978. Unlike the preceding species, there are no specimens in MZUC to allow the designation of a neotype here. As C. suturalis was a junior homonym of a Neotropical tiger beetle, W. Horn created suturata based on the same holotype. Peter Schüle (pers. comm.) found it in open secondary forests.
