Epitrichodes Rivalier, 1957 (Rev. Fr. Entom. 14: 341)
A monotypic genus restricted to Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Epitrichodes villosus (Putzeys, 1880) (Jorn. Sc. Math. Phys. Nat. Lisboa: 22)
Distribution in Angola
Old records:
— Type locality: Huilla (=Missão da Huila) (HUILA) (356) (Lobo d`Avila leg.), 1♀, MLZA. —Malange (=Malanje) (MALANJE) (131) (Quedenfeldt 1883 sub Cicindela semicuprea ). —Malange (Mechow) (=Malanje) (MALANJE) (131), Chipeyo (=Chipeio, Pedra do) (BENGUELA) (253),
Chiyaka (=Tchiacana) (BENGUELA) (251), Ekuiva River (=Kuiva River) (BENGUELA or HUAMBO)
(Welman & Horn 1908 sub Cicindela villosa ).
—Bimbi (=Bimbe) (HUAMBO) (210), Ebanga (BENGUELA) (254) (Horn 1935; Monard et al. 1956 both sub
Cicindela villosa ; Ferreira 1965).
New localities reported: 75 km N Caconda (near Cuima) (HUAMBO) (280); 20 km S Caluquembe, 3,5 km SW Negola, 20 km NE Cacula (HUILA) (317) (P. Schüle pers. comm.).
Material examined: Huilla, Lobo d`Avila leg., 1♀, reg. nº 1846, “Old Collection” MZUC, (one blue label with black margin printed “M.Z.U.C. (Registo) nº 1846” plus another white label with black margin hand written “Huilla Lobo d`Avila”.
Remarks. A tiger beetle species of Angola and D.R. of the Congo (Werner, 2000b). Welman & Horn (1908) wrote that the species was “taken on dark soil, often in short grass” highlighting that “it has a good cryptic coloring and his hard to see”. P. Schüle (pers. comm.) found it in open secondary forests.
The female holotype deposited in the MLZA of Lisboa (Basilewsky 1960) was destroyed by the catastrophic fire of 1978. As there are no paratypes or syntypes designated for this species and in the interest of taxonomic stability we hereby designate a neotype based on the specimen explicitly labelled with the type locality mentioned by Putzeys (1880) and deposited in the MZUC. The female specimen is damaged, presenting only the scape of both antennae and missing the right anterior and hind legs, the left intermediate leg and the tarsus of left hind leg. As this species has been described in detail (female) by Putzeys (1880, p. 22) and Quedenfeldt (1883, p. 244 as Cicindela semicupreus ), no rediscription is necessary here. Moreover the species was redescribed under the description of the monotypic genus by Rivalier (1957).
Type specimen ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2. A C): Neotype ♀ (designated here) in MZUC, two labels, one labelled “Huilla Lobo d`Avila” (white label printed), other labelled “M.Z.U.C., registo nº 1846” (blue label, printed and handwritten), design. A. Serrano (red printed).
