red when alive; in preserved specimens, color varies from stramineous to piceous, always very shiny ( Fig. 2a View Fig ). Lateral margins of tibia, tarsi, and antennomeres II–XI piceous, basal portion of pedicle often lighter. Elytron may darken in its middle portion in dead specimens. Head: ovate, vertex glabrous with one long post-occular seta. Eye: oval, protruding and sub-hemispherical, bearing large ommatidia ( Fig. 2b View Fig ) intraoccular distance equivalent to diameter of eye. Antennal calli subquadrate, weakly visible. Frontal carina triangular ( Figs. 2b View Fig and 3 View Fig ), pronounced, narrowing between antennal sockets, bearing 2–3 setae just under each antennal socket. Antenna: filiform, gracile ( Figs. 1, 2b View Fig , and 3 View Fig ), all segments bearing 2–5 long setae at apices, antennomeres I and II bearing fewer apical setae and few hairs, apical segments densely invested with short fine hairs. Clypeus: transverse, bearing 2 pairs long setae, below frontal carina. Labrum: slightly broader than long, apical margin gently rounded, bearing four long setae extending beyond apical margin ( Fig. 4a View Fig ), and multiple pitcher-shaped sensilla or sensory pores. Epipharynx: with anterior edge bearing 7 or 8 short leaf-shaped setae ( Fig. 4c View Fig ) each side, setae not extending beyond anterior edge, median fraction of anterior edge bearing 3–4 pairs short stout setae, broad apical medial groove present, bearing 4 campaniform sensilla each side just laterad of groove, medial area densely invested with microtrichea from just anterior of tormae to well inside pharynx, anterior angles of tormae each bearing circular group of short setae and campaniform sensillae, membranous area mesad and posterior to this group bearing 6 campaniform sensilla each side and 1 pair on midline ( Fig. 4c View Fig ). Mandible: palmate bearing four dentae ( Fig. 4b View Fig ) and a series of peglike sensilla on interior surface; mola flattened, surface bearing transverse ridges when unworn and 1–2 short setae at base; prostheca bearing short microtrichia ( Fig. 4b View Fig ), exterior face glabrous. Maxilla ( Figs. 5a and 5b View Fig ): cardo bearing two setae at the antero-lateral edge; basistipes bearing two long and two short setae; palpus 4-segmented, basal segment small bearing 1 campaniform sensilla and 5 sensory pores, 2nd palpomere narrow at base, bearing one pair lateral setae and 2 peg-like sensilla and 4 minute sensory pores on ventral surface, large sensory pore on dorsal side, 3rd segment with ventral surface bearing basal patch of 8 sensilla and 6–7 long setae (see Fig. 5a View Fig ), dorsal surface bearing 10–13 setae ( Fig. 5b View Fig ), apical segment truncate cone, bearing 9–11 setae and 8–9 sensory pores, dorsal surface bearing short row of 8–9 tightly arranged small setae ( Fig. 5b View Fig ); mediastipes with small patch of sensilla at base of galea; galea with 13–17 short stout setae, 9 peltate, and bearing 6 sensory pores, mediastipes bearing 3–5 short setae on mesal edge; lacinia heavily invested with thickened setae. Labium ( Fig. 5c View Fig ): submentum broadly triangular bearing 16–18 long setae; mentum with transverse band of fine sensory pores, bearing 2 pairs long setae and 1 pair sensory pores each side, palpus 3-segmented, basal segment bearing 3 large sensory pores and 2–3 small sensory pores on ventral surface, 2nd palpomere bearing 4 setae and 2 sensory pores; apical segment bearing 2 setae and 4–5 sensilla, 2 apical peg-like; prementum bearing 1 pair very long setae between palpi also bearing 3 pairs long setae and 2 pairs short peg-like sensillae apically, these are surrounded by a sclerotized band bearing 2–3 sensory pores anteriorly just posterior to palp and many tightly packed stout hairs posteriorly. Hypopharynx densely invested with fine hairs ( Fig. 5c View Fig ). Pronotum weakly convex, brilliantly shining, appearing impunctate below 403, pronotal margins wide, explanate, with edge rounded as if beaded, anterior pronotal angles produced forward, covering posterior 1/3 of eye with head retracted ( Figs. 1 and 2a View Fig ), bearing one long seta slightly mesad; posterior angles bearing 1 long seta, posterior pronotal margin very weakly bisinuate. Scutellum triangular. Elytral surface shining, finely and densely punctate; humeral pronounced ( Figs. 1 and 2a View Fig ) elytral margin broad (more than the length of antennomere III at widest point), slightly concave, more coarsely punctate than elytral disc, often transparent, 88 extending almost to elytral suture, posterior 1/4th bearing evenly spaced setae. Epipleuron very broad, almost 23 antennomere III at widest point. Prosternum shining bearing fine hairs visible at higher magnifications (.253), prosternal process extending to anterior 1/2 of Mesosternum, bearing a sharp longitudinal keel its entire length ( Fig. 3 View Fig ). Etymology. From the Latin aurora for dawn alluding to the nocturnal habits, red color and commemorative for Aurora Lauzardo who is equally brilliant and also possesses a unique combination of characteristics. Gender is feminine.

Biology. Alagoasa aurora is biologically interesting because of it is frequently collected at light, (see label data, E. G. Riley pers. comm.) Nocturnal habits are unusual for so brightly colored a beetle. Host plant and immature stages are unknown.

Remarks. Another closely related species has been collected at La Fortuna reserve in Panama´. This undescribed species is very similar to Alagoasa aurora with the exception of much larger eyes, each eye being 3/8 of the width of the head and bearing extremely large facets, in the very lightly colored pronotal margins by the iridescent greenish tinge to the body coloration. Additionally the specimen collected in Nicaragua (see other material) is significantly different from the norm that we consider to be Alagoasa aurora ; we suspect that it is a different species. It differs in having opaque and lusterless elytra, femoral apices and tibia picieous, spermatheca with pump narrow and pronounced in comparison with the receptacle and gonocoxae with base more than 43 as broad as in A. aurora .

DNA. DNA sequences were submitted to Gen-bank from a specimen collected at 1,070 m above La Selva. The sequences bear accession numbers AF545066 View Materials , D2 gene, large subunit (28S) ribosomal fragment, and AF545065 View Materials , mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I fragment.
