Remarks. Euryrhynchus amazoniensis resembles E. wrzesniowskii , E. taruman sp. nov. and E. tuyuca sp. nov. in having (i) the second pereopod merus with distoventral angles unarmed, smooth ( Fig. 14C View FIGURE 14 ), (ii) the third pereopod dactylus with 1 cuspidate seta on the dorsal margin, placed on mesial side ( Fig. 16B View FIGURE 16 ), and (iii) the fourth pereopod propodus usually without cuspidate seta on the distodorsal angle ( Fig. 16E, F View FIGURE 16 ). However, E. amazoniensis can be readily recognized as the pterygostomial region of carapace is produced anteriorly into a sharp tooth ( Figs. 9C View FIGURE 9 , 10A–C View FIGURE 10 ). Additional morphological differences between E. amazoniensis and the two new species are discussed further below. Euryrhynchus amazoniensis differs from E. wrzesniowskii in several key characters, including (i) the second pereopod carpus with a distal spine on the distomesial angle ( Fig. 14C View FIGURE 14 ) (versus second pereopod carpus with distomesial angle unarmed, smooth in E. wrzesniowskii , Fig. 57D View FIGURE 57 ), (ii) the fifth pereopod of dactylus with a pair of cuspidate setae on the dorsal margin ( Fig. 16I View FIGURE 16 ) (versus fifth pereopod dactylus with 1 cuspidate seta, placed on lateral side in E. wrzesniowskii , Fig. 59G, H View FIGURE 59 ), and (iii) the male gonopod stout, twisted, not overreaching the exopod, and the appendix interna inconspicuous ( Figs. 17B–E View FIGURE 17 , 23 View FIGURE 23 ) (versus male gonopod elongated, straight, overreaching exopod, and appendix interna conspicuous in E. wrzesniowskii , Figs. 60B, C, L View FIGURE 60 , 61 View FIGURE 61 ). Euryrhynchus amazoniensis is easily separated from E. burchelli , E. pemoni , and E. tomasi on the account of the latter three species having: (i) the second pereopod merus with 1 or 2 spines on the distoventral angles ( Figs. 25D View FIGURE25 ; 34C, 46D), (ii) the third pereopod dactylus with a pair of cuspidate setae on the dorsal margin ( Figs. 27B View FIGURE 27 , 35B View FIGURE 35 , 47B View FIGURE 47 ), and (iii) the fourth pereopod propodus usually with 1 cuspidate seta on the distodorsal angle ( Figs. 27D View FIGURE 27 , 35E View FIGURE 35 , 47D View FIGURE 47 ).
The type series from Tiefenbacher (1978) consists of specimens from various localities in the states of Amazonas and Pará (Brazil), most of them collected during the studies of H. Sioli and E.J. Fittkau between the 1950’s and 1970’s (see Sioli 1953, 1954, 1955, 1963; Fittkau 1974). The type series also includes Holthuis’ (1966) and Irmler’s (1975) material from Amazonas (Brazil) previously reported as E. burchelli . Most specimens from the type series were examined during the present study, except for one lot deposited in Frankfurt (SMF) and four lots deposited in Belgium (Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, Brussels) (localities 6, 18, 23, 24 and 25 in Tiefenbacher 1978: 179). Although the geographic range of the type series is large, most type specimens corresponded to E. amazoniensis sensu stricto, whereas only two lots were reidentified as E. taruman sp. nov. (see below). The superficial description provided by Tiefenbacher (1978) may be the cause of several identification errors in subsequent publications involving Brazilian material. For instance, Gomes Corrêa (1980) reported an ovigerous female from Borba (Amazonas, Brazil) (MNRJ 1083) as E. wrzesniowskii , but our analysis revealed that this specimen is actually E. amazoniensis . A number of studies conducted in the Igarapé Tarumã-Mirim (or Tarumãzinho), north-west of Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil), referred to E. amazoniensis (see Walker & Ferreira 1985; Magalhães 1988; Magalhães & Walker 1988; Odinetz Collart & Magalhães 1994; Walker 1994, 2001). However, reexamination of lots from this locality, including the voucher specimens from Magalhães (1988) and Magalhães & Walker (1988) (INPA 2169, 2175), often confirmed the presence of E. amazoniensis sensu stricto, but also of E. taruman sp. nov. The material of E. amazoniensis reported in Walker & Ferreira (1985), Odinetz Collart & Magalhães (1994) and Walker (1994, 2001) was not found at the INPA collections, potentially raising questions about the identity of these specimens. Kensley & Walker (1982) reported E. amazoniensis from several localities in the Amazon basin (including the Igarapé Tarumã-Mirim), however only the lot from Rio Tefé (Amazonas, Brazil) (INPA 127) was found at INPA and is herein confirmed as E. amazoniensis sensu stricto. Part of the specimens reported by Kemenes et al. (2010) and Pimentel & Magalhães (2014) from Amazonas and Pará (Brazil) were reexamined in the present study and confirmed as E. amazoniensis sensu stricto. The material of E. amazoniensis reported from Amapá (Brazil) in Vieira (2008) and from several localities in Venezuela and Colombia in Pereira (1991), López & Pereira (1998) and Valência & Campos (2010) were not examined herein and, consequently, doubt is cast on the identity of the specimens. Finally, E. amazoniensis is reported herein for the first time from Rondônia.
