The new subspecies is as large as the nominotypical subspecies, but has a more uniformly green forewing upperside ground colour and, consequently, a less contrasting pattern of stripes than C. subangustata subangustata . Analysis of mtDNA did not reveal any significant difference between the new and the nominotypical subspecies. The male genitalia slightly differ from those of the nominotypical subspecies in the distal hook-like process of the phallus armature having 1 to 3 small teeth apically and/or on its upperside, and a slightly less angular harpe. Two of the genital forms are shown on Figs 37 View FIGURE 37 and 38 View FIGURE 38 .
In comparison with nominotypical subspecies, which has more insular distribution (its type locality is Lebong Tandai, Bengkulu Residency area of the South Sumatra (Sumatra Selatan) province, Indonesia and it occurs on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java and Yamdena), C. subangustata continentalis inhabits continental Indochina ( Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and South-Western China) and Taiwan. Specimens matching the subspecies description in habitus and male genital morphology also occur in Sumatra, mostly in North Sumatra Province. All specimens of the nominotypical subspecies from Sumatra known to us are from West Sumatra. Among 31 specimens from there only three were identified as ssp. continentalis . Thus, it appears to be a weak introgression of spp. continentalis into this territory rather than a true sympatry. However, further study of the Sumatran distribution of the two subspecies is needed. The host plants of C. subangustata continentalis are unknown.
Etymology. The name refers to the mostly continental distribution of the subspecies, contrary to the insular distribution of the nominotypical subspecies.
