Distribution. Western Atlantic—Bermuda, Virginia to South Carolina, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, Mexico (Quintana Roo and Yucatan), West Indies and Brazil (Atol das Rocas, Fernando de Noronha, and Amapá to São Paulo) ( Christoffersen 1979, 1998; Martínez-Iglesias et al. 1997; all as Alpheus normanni Kingsley, 1878 ).

Previous records from Abrolhos. R/V Calypso, Sta. 83 (18°05’S 38°46’W), 27 m ( Christoffersen 1979, as A. normanni ); Lagoa Coroa Vermelha (17°57’40.0”S 39°12’50.5”W), south of Timbebas Reef (17°30'22.4”S 39° 00'47.0”W) and Sequeiro de Popa Verde II (18°1’13.3”S 38°59’18.0”W) ( Young & Serejo 2005, as A. normanni ); Centro Parcel Abrolhos (17°58’51.1”S 38°39’35.3”W) and south of Timbebas Reef (17°30’22.4”S 39°00’47.0”W) ( Young & Serejo 2005, as A. heterochaelis , see below).

Remarks. Alpheus packardii is part of the still unresolved amphi-American A. normanni species complex (Williams et al. 2001; Anker 2001; see also Soledade & Almeida, 2013 for more details). The Abrolhos material reported as A. heterochaelis by Young & Serejo (2005), suspected to be based on a misidentification (Almeida et al. 2012; Soledade & Almeida 2013), was re-examined and re-identified as A. cf. packardii .
