Key for males of Xiphocentron View in CoL from Brazil

There are six valid species of Xiphocentron with records in Brazil ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ), including the two species herein described and the nomen dubium X. saltuum ( Müller 1921) ( Flint et al. 1999b). Consequently, the key diagnoses only the 5 species with known males.

1 Internal margin of each inferior appendage with sclerotized process bearing spines ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 5A–B, 5D)............... 2

- Internal margin of each inferior appendage with spines but without sclerotized process ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 C–E, 5C)............... 4

2 (1) Sclerotized process apically with long spines ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 A, 5B)...................................... X. ilionea Schmid View in CoL

- Sclerotized process with short spines ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 5D).......................................................... 3

3 Inferior appendages each with strong shape discontinuity (twist) at about midlength ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 E); tergum X apically bifid; in dor- sal view, tergum X broad, at midlength about twice as wide as preanal appendages at same level ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C) X. kamakan sp. n.

- I nferior appendages each without shape discontinuity; tergum X apically entire; in dorsal view, tergum X slender, at midlength with about same width as preanal appendages at same level ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 D)............................. X. steffeni (Marlier) View in CoL

4 Basoventral margin of each inferior appendage strongly produced posterad ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 E); internal margin of inferior appendage with sclerotized indentations ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 C–D).................................................... X. maiteae sp. n.

- Basoventral margin of each inferior appendage not produced posterad ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 E, 5A); internal margins of the inferior append- ages each with two dense brushes of dark setae ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 C)............................... X. sclerothrix Pes & Hamada
