DIAGNOSIS — This genus shares characters with the Phyllocoptinae – Phyllocoptini genera Epitrimerus Nalepa and Leipothrix Keifer , except that tibia I is bare, as well as femora. The prodorsal shield presents a short, rounded anterior lobe; scapular seta situated laterally and ahead of rear shield margin. All coxal and opisthosomal setae present. Coxae I fused. Dorsal opisthosomal annuli smooth in the adults (with small microtubercles in immature stages), with a faint and short anterior dorsomedian ridge and two lateral ridges.

ETYMOLOGY — The generic name is composed of a, Greek, without, and thrix, Greek, feminin, hair and refers to the absence of seta on tibia I. Gender: feminine. Type species: Athrix lissoscutum n.sp.
