Distribution: Probably native to the Americas, with occurrence in Asia and Africa, in the Americas with distribution from the United States to Argentina ( Irwin & Barneby 1982). In Brazil it occurs in states of all regions, ( Flora do Brasil 2020). In ParNa Iguaçu it occurs in the Foz do Iguaçu and Céu Azul areas.
Reproductive period: In ParNa Iguaçu it was found in flower and fruit in January and February.
Diagnostic characteristics: Species with pinnate leaves commonly confused with S. occidentalis for being plants with a subshrubby habit and invasive along fields and the edges of forests, however, it can be differentiated by the 2–3 pairs of obovate leaflets with rounded apex in S. obtusifolia vs. 4–6 pairs of elliptical leaflets with acuminate apex in S. occidentalis .
Conservation: Native-NE.
