Coenosia cubitalis ( Emden, 1940: 181) View in CoL

( Figs 71–73 View FIGURES 65 – 76 )

Holotype male seen; in good condition.

Diagnosis. Large species (5–8 mm), brown with grey pollinosity, with brown stripes on scutum, the median one reaching apex of scutellum; frons velvety black, as wide as an eye; arista very short-haired; scutellum with both pairs of setae long; haltere yellow; anterior katepisternal seta short; coxae and femora grey pollinose; trochanters and tibiae yellow, contrasting with the grey ground-colour; legs long; pulvilli and claws welldeveloped; male with base of vein R4+5 a little enlarged and darkened, basal third of M very enlarged and darkened; hind tibia with one anterior and one anterodorsal seta, the anterior a little shorter than the anterodorsal, both inserted at the same level; sternite 5 as in Fig. 71 View FIGURES 65 – 76 .

Male terminalia. Cercal plate and surstylus as in Fig. 72 View FIGURES 65 – 76 . Aedeagal complex as in Fig. 73 View FIGURES 65 – 76 .

Notes. Included in the tigrina group. Couplet 2(1) of Emden’s (1940) key to species mentions that both C. cubitalis and C. hippelates ( Emden, 1940) have the base of veins R4+5 and M thickened and darkened, but in C. cubitalis this is much stronger. Also, to differentiate the males of both species, C. hippelates has a very long and curved ventral spur on hind tibia ( Emden 1940: Fig. 72 View FIGURES 65 – 76 ). One male paratype was dissected and illustrated.
