Acanthocornis gen. nov.
Description
Head subquadrate; frons transversely depressed. Antennal tubercles obtusely projected. Eyes finely facetted; upper lobes almost contiguous, separated by less than one-fifth of the diameter of a lobe; lower lobes very large, occupying almost completely the sides of the head. Mandibles moderately short, apex unidentate. Apices of the maxillary and labial palpi subtruncated. Antennae with 11 antennomeres, scape short, scarcely attaining the posterior margin of the upper lobes of the eyes; coarsely punctate and with a few erect hairs; antennomere 3 twice the length of the scape; antennomeres 3–10 with an acute projection on the outer side of the apex, surface of the antennomeres sparsely punctate and with a few hairs, mostly in the dorsal surface. Prothorax with a median, prominent, spiniform projection in the middle of each side, anterior margin with a minute tooth. Pronotum without elevations, the surface coarsely rugose-punctate. Prosternal process narrow, about one-third of the width of a procoxa. Mesosternal process narrow, about one-quarter of the width of a mesocoxa. Metasternum not overlapping the mesosternum. Scutellum triangular, covered with appressed yellow pubescence. Elytra covered with sparse, suberect yellow pubescence. Humeri rounded, each elytron with two feeble elevations, dorsal and parallel to the suture, from base to the apical fourth. Elytral apex rounded, without spines or projections. Legs uniformly pubescent with suberect hairs. Femora linear and depressed, not narrowed in the base. Tibiae approximately equal in length to femora. Metatarsomere I with the same length as II + III. Abdomen with five visible ventrites covered with sparse yellow pubescence.
Type-species: Acanthocornis flavus sp. nov.
Etymology
Greek, Acantho, thorn + Latin, cornis, antenna.
Comments
By the antennae with 11 antennomeres, antennomeres 3–10 with an apical external spiniform projection, sides of the prothorax with an acute spine, the metasternum not projected between mesocoxae, elytra covering the abdomen and without prominent costae, Acanthocornis gen. nov. keys to Hovorelus Galileo and Monné, 2003 and Flabellomorphus Galileo and Martins, 1990 in the key provided by Monné and Monné (2008). The genus differs from Hovorelus by the body completely dull, without metallic colours, and from Flabellomorphus by the pubescent body and the antennae with an apical, external spiniform tooth; in Flabellomorphus the body is hairless and shining and antennomeres IV–X are provided with a long flabellum in the external side of the apex.
