Genus Niglarobia Kethley, 1970

Type species: Niglarobia ereuneti Kethley, 1970 by original designation.

Diagnosis. FEMALE. Small to medium-sized quill mites (520–600). Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex smooth, without protuberances. Two pairs of hypostomal lips present. Lateral hypostomal teeth absent. Movable cheliceral digit edentate. Peritremes M-shaped, with clearly visible chambers in each branch. Stylophore rounded posteriorly. Idiosoma . Dorsal setae of idiosoma smooth. Six pairs of propodonotal setae present, arranged 2–1–1–2. Propodonotal shield entire, without pocket-like structures, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, se and c1. Hysteronotal shield varriable, present or absent. Setae d1, d2, e2, f2 and h2 long, setae f1 and h1 short. Genital and pseudanal series with 2 pairs of setae, each. Aggenital series with 3 pairs of setae. Legs. Legs I–IV subequal in thickness. Apodemes I parallel, not fused to apodemes II. Setae vsII absent. Antaxial and paraxial members of claw pair subequal in size and shape, basal angles present or absent.

MALE. Characters as in female except: total body length 400; propodonotal shield bearing bases of setae vi, ve and si; propodonotal setae arranged 2–1–2–1; setae d1, e2 and f2 short, setae h2 long.

Host range. This genus is associated with birds of two orders: Charadriiformes ( Scolopacidae , Glareolidae ) and Gruiformes (Aramidae) ( Table 18).

Habitat. Quills of primary, secondary and covert feathers.

Species included. At present this genus includes 5 species distributed in the Palaearctic (1 species), Nearctic (2), Neotropic (2) and Ethiopian (2) regions. The Palaearctic fauna includes only N. helleri , which is present in the three zoogeographical regions: Palaearctic, Nearctic and Neotropic.
