Type host: Iduna caligata (Lichtenstein) ( Passeriformes : Sylviidae ). Type locality: Europe.

Description. FEMALE (holotype). Total body length 985 (880–950 in 2 paratypes). Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum apunctate. Hypostomal apex with 1 pair of small and sharp-ended protuberances. Each medial branch of peritremes with 3 chambers, each lateral branch with 11–12 chambers. Length of apunctate stylophore and movable cheliceral digit 220 (200–210) and 130 (130–135) respectively. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield with concave anterior margin, sculptured laterally and sparsely punctate at lateral margins, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, and c1, setae se on or near this shield. Length ratio of setae vi:ve:si 1:2:4. Setae se situated anterior to level of setae c1. Oval hysteronotal shields sparsely punctate. Pygidial shield present and well sclerotized, apunctate. Genital setae shorter than aggenital setae ag1 and ag3. Length ratio of setae g1, g2:ag2 1:2. Setae ag1 and ag2 subequal in length, both about half length of ag3. Coxal fields I–IV apunctate. Setae 3c 1.5 times longer than 3b. Legs. Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III and IV with 10–11 tines. Setae tc’ and tc” of legs III and IV subequal in length. Apodemes I fused to apodemes II in middle part of apodemes II. Lengths of setae: vi 55 (45–55), ve 105 (105–110), si (230), se (250–280), c1 (245), c2 (245), d1 260 (245), d2 220 (230), e2 250 (245), f1 120 (130–160), f2 305 (340), h1 130 (125–140), h2 (305), ps1 30 (30–40), ps2 35 (30–40), g1 65 (50–55), g2 65 (65–95), ag1 120 (130–145), ag2 130 (130), ag3 (245), l’RIII 40 (40–45), l’RIV (40–45), tc’III–IV and tc”III–IV 55 (50–65), 3b (80), 3c (115–130).

MALE. Unknown.

Type material. Iduna caligata (Lichtenstein) ( Passeriformes : Sylviidae ): female holotype and 2 female paratypes ( AMU –SYR.178) (sec.); Europe , no other data. Host specimen deposited in the MNHW .

Type deposition. All type material deposited in the UAM.

Host and habitat. Monoxenous species inhabiting quills of secondary feathers of Iduna caligata .

Distribution. Europe.

Etymology. The name idunae refers to the generic name of the host.

Differential diagnosis. This new species is closely related to S. sturni . In females of both species, the hypostomal apex is ornamented by 1 pair of the protuberances and the hysteronotal shield is present. S.idunae differs from S. sturni by the following characters: in females of S. idunae , the lengths of setae vi and ve are 45–55 and 105–110 respectively; setae ag2 are twice as long as genital setae g1; setae tc’ and tc” of legs III and IV are subequal in length. In females of S. sturni , the lengths of setae vi and ve are 95–105 and 245–275 respectively; setae ag2 are about 4 times longer than genital setae g1; setae tc” of legs III and IV 1.5–2 times longer than tc’III–IV.
