Type host: Emberiza schoeniclus (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes : Emberizidae ). Type locality: Slovakia.

FEMALE (holotype and 10 paratypes). Total body length 650–750. Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum densely punctate. Each medial branch of peritremes with 5 chambers, each lateral branch with 8 chambers. Stylophore punctate, 170– 180 long. Length of movable cheliceral digit 140. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield punctate. Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1.1:3. All dorsal idiosomal setae medium in thickness and discernibly ornamented. Hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield, weakly sclerotized, anterior and posterior part of this fused shield densely punctate. Setae f1 and h1 subequal in length. Length ratio of setae ag1: ag2: ag3 1.6–1.8:1:1.8. Coxal fields I–IV densely punctate. Coxal setae 3c twice as long as 3b. Legs. Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III and IV with 6–7 tines. Setae tc”III–IV twice as long as tc’III–IV. Lengths of setae: vi 40–55, ve 50–65, si 130–165, se 215–230, c1 200–225, c2 215–250, d1 200–205, d2 190–220, e2 170–230, f1 and h1 25–30, f2 215–230, h2 330–370, ps1 15–20, g1 and g2 20–30, ag1 150–165, ag2 85–105, ag3 150–170, l’RIII 55, 3b 25, 3c 55, tc’III–IV 40–45, tc”III–IV 80–85.

MALE (2 paratypes). Total body length 400–430. Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum and stylophore punctate. Each medial branch of peritremes with 5 chambers, each lateral branch with 6–8 chambers. Length of stylophore and movable cheliceral digit 150–165 and 125 respectively. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield well sclerotized, apunctate, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, se and c1. Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1.3–1.5:2–2.5. Hysteronotal shield weakly sclerotized, margins indiscernible, not fused to pygidial shield. Setae d2 about twice as long as d1 and e2. Pygidial shield oval and large in size, well sclerotized, apunctate. Setae h2 5.5–6.5 times longer than f2. Genital setae g1 and g2 situated at same transverse level. Length ratio of setae ag1: ag2 1:1. Length of aedeagus 145. Coxal fields I–IV apunctate. Setae 3c twice as long as 3b. Legs. Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III and IV with 6 tines. Setae tc”III– IV twice as long as tc’III–IV. Lengths of setae: vi 15–20, ve 25–30, si 40, se 115, c1 105–110, d1 20, d2 40–45, e2 15 –20, f2 15–20, h2 95–110, ag1 70–80, ag2 60–70, l’RIII 25, 3b 20–25, 3c 55, tc’III–IV 20–25, tc”III–IV 45–55.

Type material examined. Emberiza schoeniclus (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes : Emberizidae ): female holotype and paratypes: 10 females, 2 males, 3 nymphs, 1 larva ( AMU –SYR.15A) (sec.); SLOVAKIA, Slovenska Kajna , 10 March 1975, coll. T. Weisz.

Type material deposition. Holotype deposited in the AMU, paratypes in the AMU, ZISP and SMB.

Non-type material examined. Type host species: 4 females, 2 males and 5 nymphs ( AMU –SYR.15B) (sec.); POLAND, Zachodniopomorskie, Darlowko Wschodnie , April 1999, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU . Same host species: 3 females ( AMU –SYR.15C) (sec.); MONGOLIA, Bulgan Aymag, near Bugat , meadow steppe near larch and birch forest, elevation 1300 m., 4 August 2000, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU and ZISP . Same host species: 3 females ( AVB 07–1010 006 ); KAZAKHSTAN, Qyzylkol ( Kyzylkol’ Lake ), elevation 335m. (43°44'35.1''N, 69°30'06.6''E), 10 October 2007, coll. P. Klimov. Material deposited in the ZISP .

Host range and habitat. Monoxenous species inhabiting quills of secondary feathers of Emberiza schoeniclus .

Distribution. Slovakia, Poland, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Remarks. This species has been also reported from Phoenicurus ochruros (Skoracki 2004a) . At present, mites from this host are assigned to the new species— B. phoenicurus sp. nov. (see above).
