Type host: Phoenicurus ochruros (Gmelin) ( Passeriformes : Turdidae ). Type locality: Poland.

Description. FEMALE (holotype). Total body length 655 (655–675 in 7 paratypes). Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum densely punctate. Each medial branch of peritremes with 5–6 chambers, each lateral branch with 8–9 chambers. Stylophore punctate, 145 (150) long. Movable cheliceral digit 110 (110–115) long. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield densely punctate on whole surface. Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1.1:3. All dorsal idiosomal setae, except terminal setae, thin and discernibly ornamented. Setae se and c1 situated at same transverse level, subequal in length. Hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield, anterior and posterior part densely punctate. Setae f1 and h1 subequal in length. Length ratio ag1: ag2: ag3 1.4–1.5:1:1.9–2. Both genital setae subequal in length. Genital plate present, bases of setae ag2 and ag3 located on this plate. Coxal fields I–IV densely punctate. Setae 3c 2.6 times longer than 3b. Legs: Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III and IV with 6 tines. Setae tc”III–IV twice as long as tc’III–IV. Lengths of setae: vi 30 (30–40), ve 35 (40–50), si (135–155), se 155 (160–180), c1 155 (150–165), c2 155 (150–155), d1 145 (155–165), d2 140 (150–170), e2 125 (130–150), f1 and h1 20 (20–25), f2 (195–215), h2 (280–285), ps1 15 (15–20), g1 and g2 20 (20), ag1 (90–115), ag2 55 (60–80), ag3 (140–155), l’RIII 25 (25–35), l’RIV 20 (20–30), 3b 25 (25–30), 3c 75 (70–80), tc’III–IV 35 (35–40), tc”III–IV 65 (65–75).

MALE. Total body length 430–435 in 2 paratypes. Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum sparsely punctate. Each medial branch of peritremes with 5–6 chambers, each lateral branch with 8–10 chambers. Stylophore punctate, 130–135 long. Movable cheliceral digit 110–115 long. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield well sclerotized, apunctate, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, se and c1. Length ratio of setae vi: ve: si 1:1:1–1.2. Hysteronotal shield weakly sclerotized, not fused to pygidial shield, apunctate, bearing bases od setae d1 and e2. Setae d2 2–3 times longer than d1 and e2. Pygidial shield oval and large in size, apunctate. Setae h2 6 times longer than f2. Genital setae g1 and g2 situated at same transverse level. Length ratio ag1: ag2 1:1. Length of aedeagus 135. Coxal fields I–IV sparsely punctate. Coxal setae 3c 3 times longer than 3b. Legs. Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III and IV with 6 tines. Setae tc”III–IV twice as long as tc’III–IV. Lengths of setae: vi 25–30, ve 25–30, si 25–35, se 115, c1 115–120, c2 90–100, d1 20, d2 30–60, e2 20, f2 15–20, h2 120, ag1 60–75, ag2 55–65, l’RIII 30–45, 3b 20–25, 3c 70, tc’III–IV 20–25, tc”III–IV 45–55.

Type material. Phoenicurus ochruros (Gmelin) ( Passeriformes : Turdidae ): female holotype, 8 female and 2 male paratypes ( AMU –SYR.237) (sec.); POLAND, Zachodniopomorskie, Weltyn , May 2001, coll G. Kiljan .

Type deposition. Holotype deposited in the AMU, paratypes in the AMU and ZISP.

Host range and habitat. Monoxenous species inhabiting quills of secondary feathers of Phoenicurus ochruros .

Distribution. Poland.

Etymology. The name phoenicurus refers to the generic name of the host.

Differential diagnosis. This new species is morphologically similar to Syringophiloidus schoeniclus . In females of both species each lateral branch of the peritremes has 13 chambers; all shields on the dorsum and coxal fields are punctate. Females of this new species are distinguished from S. schoeniclus by the following characters: in females of S. phoenicurus , aggenital setae ag1 and ag2 are subequal in the length; setae c1, c2 and d1 are shorter than 170; movable cheliceral digit is 110–115 long. In females of S. schoeniclus , aggenital setae ag1 are 1.6–1.8 times longer than ag2; setae c1, c2 and d1 are longer than 190; movable cheliceral digit is 140 long.
