REMARKS: These are the first records from the Adriatic Sea.

? Polygordius lacteus Schneider, 1868 View in CoL

DISTRIBUTION: NA.

LITERATURE RECORDS: Graeff 1905; Salvini-Plawen 1968. REMARKS: Given the historical difficulty in distinguishing morphologically P. l a ct e us from P. neapolitanus Fraipont, 1887 , together with their known different geographical distributions, it is likely that the Adriatic records of P. l a ct e us actually refer to P. neapolitanus or possibly to P. triestinus Woltereck in Hemplemann, 1906 (since Graeffe's 1905 report is from the Gulf of Trieste—the type locality for P. triestinus ) (P. Ramey-Balci, pers. comm.). Polygordius lacteus was originally described from Helgoland, in the North Sea ( Schneider 1868) and its known distribution includes the North Sea and the North East Atlantic Ocean; P. neapolitanus was, on the other hand, described from the Gulf of Naples ( Fraipont 1887) and distributed through the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, while P. triestinus Woltereck in Hemplemann, 1906 was described from the Gulf of Trieste, and until now reported only from the northern Adriatic.

*(E) Polygordius triestinus Woltereck in Hempelmann, 1906

DISTRIBUTION: NA.

LITERATURE RECORDS: Hempelmann 1906; Salvini-Plawen 1968; Castelli et al. 2008. NEW RECORDS: BM11, BM12, BM13, BM21, BM26, BM27, BM28, BM34, BM53, BM65. REMARKS: The identity of the specimens from the stations of these new records was confirmed by P. Ramey-Balci, an expert on Polygordius . Polygordius triestinus was originally described by Hempelmann (1906) from the Gulf of Trieste (NA) and since then only reported once by Salvini-Plawen (1968) near Rovinj. The re-description of the species is in progress, by P. Ramey-Balci, B. Mikac and D. Fiege, based on the material collected at some of the stations reported here.
