Geographical distribution: Botswana, Namibia, RSA, Tanzania, Madagascar (introduced).
5. Lichenophanes fasciculatus ( Fall, 1909) and L. penicillatus ( Lesne, 1895)
Fall described L. fasciculatus based on a specimen from southern California (Santa Rosa) collected by Mr. Beyer. The syntype is in Harvard University collection, and very good-quality photographs of the specimen and labels can be found on the website of the MCZ .
Due to characteristic, very long and erect pubescence on the body (which is not found in any other species of the Lichenophanes genus), it cannot be doubted that L. fasciculatus is identical with L. penicillatus . The latter was described slightly earlier from Mexico (MNHN). So L. fasciculatus should be treated as a junior synonym of L. penicillatus . Full synonymy of the species is as follows:
