Pinotus foveolatus Luederwaldt, 1931: 353 View in CoL
Description
Medium-sized species, 16 – 20 mm, body entirely black, pronotum shining, at least basal half of elytra dull and finely sericeous, apex of elytra clearly shiner, sometimes legs and ventral surface of the body with reddish cast, antennal club orange to brownish. Head: clypeus of both sexes acuminate and elongated forward, clypeal margin reflexed at middle, either distinctly emarginated with two sharp teeth or weakly sinuated, head margin notched at the clypeo-genal junction, genal margin slightly expanded beyond the clypeus. Fronto-clypeal region with a central and transversal carina, cephalic carina strong and high, apical ridge of carina either concave at middle and acutely elevated at both sides (male) or straight and flattened (female), cephalic carina always flanked by two small humps slightly backward, frons with a deep or shallow depression at middle, surface of head finely wrinkled, cephalic carina and surrounding regions smooth to punctuated. Thorax: pronotum convex, anterior region almost vertical above the head, vertical side transversally flattened (lateral view), anteromedial protuberances absent, anterior margin of pronotum with a thin and low bead, lateral margins evenly curved, posterior margin obtusely angulated at middle. Pronotum finely and densely punctuated, deeper punctures near the lateral margins, posterior margin with coarse and shallow punctures, sometimes associated with very small granules, posteromedial region of pronotum with a very shallow and longitudinal sulcus at middle. Elytra strongly convex, striae well impressed, interstriae weakly convex with inconspicuous punctures, elytral surface finely microsculptured, lateral interstriae shiner. Prosternum with tiny punctures and short setae, mesosternum finely granulose, with coarse and shallow punctures, some punctures with short setae, medial region swollen and smooth. Metasternum feebly convex, with a shallow sulcus at middle, very fine and setiferous punctures on the superior side and along the inner margins of mesocoxae, inferior margins of metasternum distinctly depressed at middle. Abdomen: pygidium completely bordered, surface finely punctuated. Legs: anterior margin of fore tibiae obliquely truncated, anterior and internal angles simple, with a few long setae. Apical spur acuminated at the apex, directed downward and inward, hind tibiae with apical spur apically truncated. Male genitalia: parameres as illustrated in Figure 5 View Figure 5 (c – d).
