Sathytes cristatus Yin and Li , sp. nov.

Type material

Holotype. Male, labelled ‘ CHINA: Yunnan Prov. / Gongshan County / Qiqi , alt. 1900 m / 2 July 2010 / Liang TANG leg.’.

Paratypes. Two males, three females, same label data as holotype, but ‘alt. ca. 2000 m / 25 May 2009 / Jian-Qing ZHU leg .’.

Description

Male. Body reddish brown, mouthparts and tarsi lighter; BL 2.01–2.37. Head ( Figure 3A ) slightly wider than long, HL 0.45–0.47, HW 0.47–0.49. Vertexal foveae indistinct, anterior edge of foveae at level of posterior margin of eyes; LE: LP = 1.25: 1. Eyes well-developed, each comprises about 20 facets. Antennae with scapes thick and large, pedicels larger than antennomeres III, III wider than IV, IV–VIII about equal in width, IX–XI ( Figure 4A ) strongly clubbed; semi-membranous apophysis on antennomere IX as in Figure 7A ; antennomere X much wider than long, XI ( Figure 6D ) with single basal protuberance covered with tuft of long setae.

Pronotum about as long as wide, PL 0.47–0.52, PW 0.47–0.51. Elytra combined wider than long, EL 0.66–0.68, EW 0.81–0.85. Abdomen wider than long, AL 0.43–0.70, AW 0.68–0.76; tergite IV about 2.5 times as long as next. Length of aedeagus ( Figure 8A ) 0.16.

Female. Similar to male in size: BL 2.32–2.39, HL 0.45–0.47, HW 0.48–0.50, PL 0.50–0.52, PW 0.49–0.51. Elytra combined wider than long, EL 0.62–0.64, EW 0.82–0.83, AL 0.75–0.76, AW 0.80–0.81. Eyes comprise about 12 facets each.

Habitat and distribution

Sifted from the mixed leaf litter of a broad-leaved forest. Southwest China (Yunnan).

Etymology

The specific name refers to the unique form of antennomere XI in the male.

Remarks

The new species resembles a number of species having single basal protuberance on antennomere XI: S. larinus , S. longitrabis , S. sichuanicus , S. usitatus , S. yunnanicus and S. imitator . Among them, S. cristatus is closest to S. yunnanicus described below. They share numerous external characters and a similar form of the aedeagus. Males of the two species can be separated by the apophysis of antennomere IX being slightly shorter, and the posterior margin of the basal protuberance of antennomere XI lacking a minute semi-sclerotized swelling in S. cristatus .
