Type material

Holotype. Male, labelled ‘ CHINA: Yunnan Prov. / Gongshan County / Qiqi , alt. 1980 m / Jian-Qing ZHU leg.’.

Description

Male. Body reddish brown, mouthparts and tarsi lighter; BL 1.54. Head ( Figure 3I View Figure 3 ) wider than long, HL 0.30, HW 0.37. Vertexal foveae indistinct, posterior edge of foveae located slightly anterior to level of posterior margin of eyes; LE: LP = 1.86: 1. Eyes well-developed, prominent, each comprises about 20 facets. Antennae with scapes thick and large; pedicels larger than antennomeres III, III–IV subequal in width, V–VI subequal in width, slightly wider than IV, VII–VIII subequal in width, slightly wider than VI, IX–XI ( Figure 5C View Figure 5 ) strongly clubbed; semi-membranous apophysis on antennomere IX as in Figure 7I View Figure 7 ; antennomere X much wider than long, XI ( Figure 6G View Figure 6 ) with two truncate basal protuberances, the more basal one covered with tufts of specialized apical setae.

Pronotum as long as wide, PL 0.37, PW 0.37. Elytra combined wider than long, EL 0.45, EW 0.60. Abdomen wider than long, AL 0.42, AW 0.55; tergite IV 2.3 times as long as next. Length of aedeagus ( Figure 8I View Figure 8 ) 0.15.

Female. Unknown.

Habitat and distribution

Sifted from the mixed leaf litter of a broad-leaved forest. Southwest China (Yunnan).

Etymology

The specific name indicates that the new species is uncommon.

Remarks

The new species is placed near a number of species centred on S. rufus (see remarks under S. longwangshanus and S. paulus ). Sathytes rarus can be readily separated by the antennomere IX with distinctive long apophysis located anterior to the middle.
