Family Corethrellidae Edwards View in CoL
Corethrellini Edwards 1932: 16 .
Corethrellinae Cook 1965: 104 .
Corethrellidae Wood and Borkent 1986: 262, 1989: 1359 View in CoL , 1366.
Corethrellidae View in CoL , as members of the Culicoidea within the Culicomorpha , are closely related to Culicidae View in CoL (mosquitoes) and Chaoboridae View in CoL (phantom midges). For many years they were placed in the Culicidae View in CoL along with the chaoborids, then just with the chaoborids, and have only recently been recognized as a separate family because of evidence that they are the sister group of the Chaoboridae View in CoL + Culicidae View in CoL ( Wood and Borkent 1986, 1989). Edwards (1932) was first to recognize the tribe Corethrellini, Cook (1965) the first to propose the rank of subfamily and Wood and Borkent (1986) the first to propose a separate family for this genus.
Because the family is monobasic, all features of the family are given below under the genus Corethrella View in CoL . Papavero (2002) recognized both Corethrella View in CoL and Lutzomiops as valid genera in his catalog of the species from the Brazilian Amazon. However, Lutzomiops is a synonym of Corethrella View in CoL and represents what is here recognized as the peruviana View in CoL species group.
