Dendrolirium sulcatum Blume (1825: 347) View in CoL .

Type: — INDONESIA. West Java: Gede, Blume s.n. (holotype BO, fide Wood & Cribb 1994).

Ecology and phenology in Vietnam: —Clustering epiphyte. Primary and old secondary humid evergreen broad-leaved montane forests on granite at elevations of 1500–1600 m a.s.l. Very rare. Flowers in May–June.

Distribution: — Vietnam: provinces Khanh Hoa (Hon Ba Mountains) and Lam Dong (Bidoup Mountains). Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the Philippines, Lesser Sunda Islands.

Conservation status in Vietnam: —The species was recorded from two locations within the country, i.e. in Hon Ba and Bidoup mountains. Both these areas are legally protected at a national level, belonging to the Hon Ba Nature Reserve and Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park. Meanwhile, the extent and quality of habitats in these areas severely decrease due to fractional logging, road construction and agricultural activity. Taking into consideration the small number of observed plants, we estimate the national conservation status of the species as Near Threatened (NT). The conservation status of this species outside Vietnam has never been evaluated.

Notes: — Phreatia sulcata is reported here as a new record for the flora of Vietnam. The species was earlier known to have a broad distribution in Malesia and also in central Thailand, which made its occurrence in southern Vietnam rather expectable. Phreatia sulcata is quite distinct from the other mainland species of the genus in its pseudobulbous stem and long inflorescence, which is more than twice as long as the leaves.
