Note. Simulium rubzovianum was considered a synonym of Simulium velutinum ( Santos Abreu, 1922) previously ( Adler & Crosskey 2015). However, one of the chromosomal segregates of the S. aureum group recently found by Adler et al. (2015) in North Africa was linked with the name S. rubzovianum . This species extends from North Africa northwards through the Mediterranean area to the British Isles, Fennoscandia and Turkey (Adler et al. 2015; Leonhardt 1985). The type locality of S. rubzovianum is in Serbia, not far from the Croatian border. Therefore we retain the older record of Živković (1969) under the name S. rubzovianum . According to the newly proposed concept of S. velutinum sensu stricto, the name velutinum is restricted to North Africa and the Canary Islands (Adler et al. 2015). The records of the members of the S. aureum group from Croatia need to be reviewed using morphological, molecular and, especially cytotaxonomical, approaches.
No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Taxonomic information exchange and copyright: the Plazi approach. BMC Research Notes 2009, 2:53 for further explanation.
