Redescription. Male. Body small to mediumsized; moderately robust. Rostrum: Moderately short, 0.67X as long as prothorax; reddish brown, broadly subcylindrical; dorsum nearly straight, uneven; flattened along midline; venter straight, lacking carina; basal scales contiguous, moderately rough, agglutinate; apical 1/3 clothed with subcontiguous, rough, plumose scales; sides subparallel; suprascrobal groove strongly developed. Head: Moderately convex; agglutinate scales nongranulate, contiguous, brownish; plumose scales whitish, on articulating area and around eyes; frons without submedian setae, broad, 0.53X as wide as head across eyes, flattened, indistinctly set off from rostrum by shallow impression. Antennae: Inserted at apical 1/4; scape moderately long, moderately stout, strongly clavate, with 1–2 subapical setae; scape and funicle reddish brown; funicle long, 1.47X as long as scape, club elongate-oval, asymmetrical, 0.44X as long as funicle, reddish brown, 1 st club segment 0.67X total club length, glabrous. Pronotum: Transverse, 0.85X as long as broad; sides subparallel, weakly expanding from base; apical constriction sudden and strong, in apical 1/5; scales dense, roughened, agglutinate; apical constriction dorsally distinct and uniform, weakly rounded behind constriction, sides slightly impressed behind round area; disc transversely, unevenly flattened, not undulate, not rugose or rugulose; sides of disk and pleuron pale tan-brown; ocular lobes moderately strongly developed. Elytra: 1.26X wider at humeri than pronotum; 1.56X longer than wide at humeri; subparallel, sinuate behind humeri to declivity, declivity at 60° (in relation to dorsal plane); moderately wider than prothorax; apices subacuminate, conjointly slightly emarginate; humeri well-developed, obliquely angulate, subacute, weakly produced; intervals not even in width, all flattened to all moderately strongly convex, odd-numbered intervals with setae lacking; swellings only present posteriorly on declivity; strial grooves distinct, deep, narrow, punctures mediumsized, round, deep and well-separated, slightly wider than strial grooves; scales flattened, contiguous and few imbricate, oval, arranged irregularly, usually with 3 or more scales across intervals, brownish; fasciate-maculate; cuticle reddish brown. Venter: Prosternum medially clothed, broadly in front of coxae and broadly behind coxae, with plumose scales. Abdominal ventrites: Ventrite I with median impression deep, broad, uniformly impressed for entire length, not narrowed apically, continued on basal 1/2 of ventrite II; ventrite I with apical margin not declivous, 1.33X as long as II; ventrite II medially impressed, with impression broad, shallow, apical 2/5 declivous, not impressed on declivity; 2.50X as long as III and IV together; ventrite V strongly transversely convex basally; transversely impressed apically, impression deep, broad, lacking median subapical carina or tubercle; with 1 pair of coarse, erect apicolateral setae; 2.50X as long as III and IV together, 1.00X as long as II; 0.75X as long as I; I and II completely clothed, with contiguous, agglutinate scales; III and IV completely clothed, with dense, recumbent, plumose scales, and lacking setae. Tergite VII: Apical margin moderately emarginate medially. Legs: Moderately long; femora clavate, reddish brown; tibiae moderately slender, reddish brown; fore and hind tibiae with inner margin straight, with outer margin straight or nearly so toward apex (in lateral view), conspicuous short bristles on inner surface, short moderately distinct bristles on outer surface; middle tibiae with long, fine swimming hairs, on inner and outer margins; hind tibial mucro 3-toothed, basal tooth small, slender, long, acute, posteriorly directed, median tooth very small, acute, apically directed, apical tooth large, angulate, subparallel to apex of tibia; tarsi moderately long, sublinear, reddish brown, slightly widened toward apex; tarsomere 3 not wider at apex than 2, sublinear, subtruncate; claws reddish brown. Genitalia: As in Fig. 33 View Figs . Standard length: 2.30 mm.

Female. Rostrum: 0.58X as long as prothorax; frons broad, 0.50X as wide as head across eyes. Elytra: 1.34X wider at humeri than pronotum; 1.80X longer than wide at humeri. Antennae: Inserted at apical 1/3. Tergite VII: Apical margin moderately emarginate medially. Abdominal ventrites: Ventrite I with median impression shallow, narrow, appearing nearly flat; 1.20X as long as II; II flattened; not impressed on declivity, apically declivous; V transversely convex basally; transversely impressed apically, impression shallow, narrow. Standard length: 3.20 mm.

Intraspecific Variation. This is a relatively uniform species which ranges from gray to brownish, with at most indistinct maculations. Range in size of this species is very great, and the individuals of the smaller populations are proportional to the individuals of the larger populations (small to medium-sized, 2.00– 3.60 mm).

Remarks and Comparative Notes. This species is quite similar to L. oryzophilus which has nearly flattened intervals on the disc of the elytra, becoming convex only laterally. Also, the elytral apex is weakly rounded to truncate, not emarginate with lateral processes.

Biological Notes. This species has been taken feeding on the aquatic grass Sacciolepis striata (L.) Nash ( Poaceae ). It has been collected at night on many genera of aquatic grasses.

Distribution. Native to eastern USA (Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina) and Cuba.
