Lissorhoptrus longipennis longipennis Kuschel 1952: 37 View in CoL . Holotype male, Florida, Paradise Key , USA (USNM). 1 paratype (NZAC).

Redescription. Male. Body small to large, robust. Rostrum: Moderately short, 0.67X as long as prothorax; reddish black, broadly subcylindrical; dorsum weakly curved, apex abruptly depressed; flattened along midline; venter straight, lacking carina; with basal scales contiguous, moderately rough, agglutinate; apical 1/3 clothed with subcontiguous, rough, plumose scales; sides unevenly subparallel; suprascrobal groove weakly developed. Head: Moderately weakly convex; scales subgranulate, contiguous, brownish black and brown; plumose scales whitish around and behind eyes; frons with numerous distinct curved submedian setae, narrow, 0.42X as wide as head across eyes, flattened, not set off from rostrum by impression. Antennae: Inserted at apical 1/4; scape moderately long, moderately stout, strongly clavate, with 1–2 subapical setae; scape and funicle dark reddish; funicle short, 0.80X as long as scape, club long, broadly oval, asymmetrical, 0.50X as long as funicle, reddish black, 1 st club segment ca. 0.75X total club length, glabrous. Pronotum: Transverse, 0.84X as long as broad; sides unevenly, weakly rounded, moderately expanding from base; apical constriction sudden and strong, in apical 1/3; scales dense, roughened, agglutinate; apical constriction dorsally distinct and uniform, strongly rounded behind constriction, sides not impressed behind constriction; disc transversely weakly convex, not undulate, rugulose; disc with sides brown; pleuron with dark brown maculae; ocular lobes weakly developed. Elytra: 1.26X wider at humeri than pronotum; 1.23X longer than wide at humeri; subparallel, sinuate behind humeri to declivity, declivity at 60° (in relation to dorsal plane); moderately wider than prothorax; apices nonacuminate, conjointly subtruncate; humeri moderately developed, obliquely angulate, subacute, subacutely produced; intervals not even in width, moderately to strongly convex, odd-numbered intervals with setae lacking; swellings scarcely evident, becoming progressively larger and more acute posteriorly; strial grooves distinct, deep, broad, punctures medium-sized, round, deep and separated by own diameter, wider than strial grooves; scales subgranulate, contiguous, oval, arranged regularly, usually with row of 2 scales across intervals brown, tan, and whitish; maculate; cuticle reddish black. Venter: Prosternum medially clothed, narrowly in front of coxae and broadly behind coxae, with plumose scales. Abdominal ventrites: Ventrite I with median impression deep, moderately broad, uniformly impressed for entire length, slightly narrowed apically, not continued on ventrite II, with apical margin not declivous, 1.50X as long as II; ventrite II medially impressed, with impression broad, shallow, apical 1/10 declivous, not impressed on declivity; 3.00X as long as III and IV together; ventrite V transversely convex basally, apically medially foveate, impression deep, broad, lacking median subapical carina or tubercle; with cluster of 3–4 coarse, suberect apicolateral setae; 4.00X as long as III and IV together; 1.33X as long as II; 0.89X as long as I; I and II completely clothed, with contiguous, agglutinate scales; III and IV completely clothed, with dense, suberect, plumose scales, and few coarse, suberect setae. Tergite VII: Apical margin moderately, medially emarginate. Legs: Moderately long; femora clavate, reddish black; tibiae slender, reddish black; fore and hind tibiae with inner margin weakly bisinuate, with outer margin straight or nearly so toward apex (in lateral view), moderately long bristles on inner surface, short conspicuous bristles on outer surface; middle tibiae with long, coarse swimming hairs, on inner and outer margins; hind tibial mucro 2-toothed, basal tooth moderately large, acute, posteriorly directed, median tooth minute, scarcely evident, apical tooth large, acute, internally directed; tarsi moderately long, sublinear, reddish black, slightly widened toward apex; tarsomere 3 not wider at apex than 2, sublinear, truncate; claws reddish brown. Standard length: 2.70 mm.

Female. Rostrum: 0.60X as long as prothorax; frons narrow, 0.43X as wide as head across eyes. Antennae: Inserted at apical 1/3; funicle short, 0.83X as long as scape, club long, broad-oval, asymmetrical, 0.57X as long as funicle. Elytra: 1.23X wider at humeri than pronotum; 1.5X longer than wide at humeri. Tergite VII: Apical margin deeply emarginate medially. Abdominal ventrites: Ventrite I with median impression lacking; 1.44X as long as II; II flattened, not impressed on declivity, apically declivous; ventrite V evenly convex basally, transversely impressed apically,; impression shallow, broad, lacking median subapical carina or tubercle. Standard length: 3.25 mm.

Intraspecific Variation. This relatively uniformly unicolorous species varies greatly in size from 2.20–4.00 mm.

Remarks and Comparative Notes. Lissorhoptrus longipennis is very similar to L. longitarsis but lacks that species’ distinct pronotal and elytral black vittae.

Biological Notes. A large series of more than 100 specimens was collected from a saline marsh and pond, from an aquatic beak-rush ( Rhynchospora Vahl. ; Cyperaceae ).

Distribution. Throughout Florida.
