Corynoneura acuminata sp. n.

( Figs 1 B–G; Figs 2 A–D)

Corynoneura View in CoL n. sp. 9 Bolton, 2007: 26

Type material. Holotype male, with associated larval and pupal exuviae, USA: Ohio, Hocking County, E. Br. Raccoon Creek at Sanner Road , RM 6.6 , 3.x.1996, M.J. Bolton ( ZMBN Type no. 452) . Paratypes: 1 male, 1 pupal and 1 larval exuviae, as holotype; 2 larval exuviae, as holotype except for 21.viii.1995 ( ZMBN, MJB) .

Etymology. From Latin, acuminatus, pointed, sharpened, referring to the pointed triangular superior volsella.

Diagnostic characters. The adult male is characterized by a strongly concave anterior margin of the cibarial pump; antenna with 9 flagellomeres; superior volsella pointed triangular; inferior volsella broad and placed caudally on gonocoxite; and transverse sternapodeme narrow U-shaped. The pupa has no taeniate L-setae on tergites I–II, tergites III–VII with some thick shagreen, and 14–16 taeniae in fringe of anal lobe (the taeniae are restricted to the posterior half of segment). The larva is separable by having mentum with two large median teeth, lateral tooth adjacent to median tooth very small, antenna slightly shorter than head capsule, and head capsule integument sculptured with fine ridges that are usually in a reticulate pattern.

Male (n = 1–2)

Total length 0.87–1.22 mm. Wing length 0.72–0.73 mm. Total length/wing length 1.20–1.72. Wing length/ profemur length 3.30–3.42.

Coloration. Head brown. Antenna and legs yellowish. Thorax with upper antepronotum, upper scutum, scutellum, postnotum and ventral part of preepisternum brown, anepisternum and dorsal part of preepisternum yellowish. Abdomen light brown.

Head. Antenna ( Fig. 1 B) with 9 flagellomeres, AR 0.49–0.52; ultimate flagellomere 135–136 µm, apically expanded, with about 8–10 apical sensilla chaetica; longest antennal seta 135–138 µm. Temporals absent. Tentorium, stipes and cibarial pump as in Fig. 1C; tentorium 112–113 µm long, 14 µm wide; stipes 43–55 µm long, 3 µm wide. Anterior margin of cibarial pump strongly concave. Clypeus with 10 setae. Length of palpomeres (in µ m): 10–11, 10–12, 15–17, 23–25, 51–52. Palpomere 5/3 ratio 3.1–3.4.

Thorax. Dorsocentrals 4, prealars 2. Scutellum with 2 setae. Anapleural suture 101–105 µm long.

Wing ( Fig. 1 E). VR 3.2–3.5. Cu/wing length 0.57, C 165–168 µm long, Cu 412 µm long, wing width/wing length 0.40–0.41. Brachiolum with 1 seta, costa with 3–4 setae.

Legs. Fore trochanter with dorsal keel. Spurs of fore tibia 19–25 µm and 10 µm long, of mid tibia 11 µm and 14 µm long, of hind tibia 25–29 µm and 11–12 µm long. Width at apex of fore tibia 11–14 µm, of mid tibia 15 µm, of hind tibia (a) 29 µm. Width of hind tibia 1 / 3 from apex (d) 12 µm, elongation length (b) 28 µm, length of maximum thickening (c 1) 69 µm, total length of thickening (c 2) 124 µm, a/d 2.6, b/d 2.5, c 1 /d 6.3, c 2 /d 11.3. Hind tibia ( Fig. 1 D) expanded, with comb of 10 setae, one seta near spur strongly S-shaped. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 1.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 1 F–G). Tergite IX with 4–5 long setae. Laterosternites IX with 1 long seta. Superior volsella pointed triangular, anteriomedially completely separated. Inferior volsella broad, with many glandular setae and strong marginal setae, along the inner margin of gonocoxite and placed caudally. Phallapodeme slightly curved, 28–32 µm long, with lateral apex bifid and joint with sternapodeme placed pre-laterally. Transverse sternapodeme narrow, 7–11 µm wide. Large attachment point of lateral sternapodeme with phallapodeme placed and directed caudally. Gonostylus curved, 22 µm long; megaseta 4–6 µm long. HR 3.3–4.5, HV 4.0.
