Material examined: USA, Ohio, Portage County, Frame Lake , 2 males with associated larval and pupal exuviae, 2 females with associated larval and pupal exuviae, 21.vi.1987, M.J. Bolton ( ZMBN, MJB) .
Diagnostic characters. Based on the specimens from USA, the adult male is characterized by straight posterior margin of tergite IX; superior volsella rectangular and partly overlapping with inferior volsella; transverse sternapodeme thick and medially strongly concave. The adult female has AR 0.47–0.56; with 6 transparent developed serrated lateral lamellae on inner side of coxosternapodeme and 6 smaller fused lanceolate sensilla on the margin of labia. The pupa has no taeniate L-setae and shagreen on tergites I–II, all the tergites with weak shagreen and few minute hooklets; and 29–31 taeniae in fringe of anal lobe. The larvae are separable by having mentum with three median teeth, the mentum has 6 lateral teeth, the lateral tooth adjacent to median tooth not small and the outer one very small, all antennal segments of the same color; length of antenna/length of head 2.35–2.41; and head capsule unsculptured.
Male (n = 1–2)
Total length 1.23–1.30 mm. Wing length 0.73–0.75 mm. Total length/wing length 1.64–1.80. Wing length/ profemur length 2.9–3.0.
Coloration. Head brown. Antenna and legs yellowish. Thorax with upper antepronotum, upper scutum, scutellum, postnotum and preepisternum brown, medially yellowish. Abdomen: tergite VII medially pale yellow, marginally brown; other tergites brown.
Head. Antenna ( Fig. 11 B) with 12 flagellomeres, ultimate flagellomere 131 µm, AR 0.47–0.54; antenna apically expanded, with about 15–20 apical sensilla chaetica, longest antennal seta 260–280 µm. Temporals absent. Tentorium, stipes and cibarial pump as in Fig. 10 C, tentorium 121–131 µm long, 18–22 µm wide; stipes 65–81 µm long, 3–4 µm wide. Anterior margin of cibarial pump strongly concave. Clypeus with 8–11 setae. Lengths of palpomeres (in µ m): 10–12; 17; 22–23; 30–32; 54–55. Palpomere 5/3 ratio: 2.4–2.5.
Thorax. Dorsocentrals 4–5, prealars 2, supraalars 1. Scutellum with 2 setae. Anapleural suture 101–103 µm long.
Wing ( Fig. 11 A). VR 3.3. Cu/wing length 0.61–0.63, C length 196–212 µm long, Cu 460–468 µm long, C/ wing length 0.26–0.29, wing width/wing length 0.34–0.35. Costa with 6–7 setae.
Legs. Fore trochanter with dorsal keel. Spurs of fore tibia 15–17 µm and 8 µm long, of mid tibia 14–15 µm and 6–7 µm long, of hind tibia 32 µm and 8 µm long. Width at apex of fore tibia 18–21 µm, of mid tibia 18–19 µm, of hind tibia (a) 30–35 µm. Width of hind tibia 1 / 3 from apex (d) 17–20 µm, elongation length (b) 21–23 µm, length of maximum thickening (c 1) 55–57 µm, total length of thickening (c 2) 97–100 µm, a/d 1.75–1.80, b/d 1.1–1.2, c 1 /d 3.1–3.2, c 2 /d 5.6–5.7. Hind tibia ( Fig. 11 D) expanded, with comb of 13 setae, one seta near spur hooked. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 9.
Hypopygium ( Fig. 11 E–F; Fig. 12 A). Posterior margin of tergite IX almost straight, with 6 long setae. Laterosternites IX with 1 long seta. Superior volsella rectangle, anteriomedially separated. Inferior volsella well developed, partly overlapping with superior volsella. Phallapodeme strongly curved, 72–80 µm long, with lateral projection and joint with sternapodeme placed pre–lateral. Transverse sternapodeme thick and medially strongly concave, 17 µm wide. Large attachment point of lateral sternapodeme with phallapodeme placed in caudal third and directed caudally. Gonostylus apical slightly curved, 22–30 µm long; megaseta 4 µm long. HR 2.9–4.1, HV 4.1–5.9.
Female (n = 1–2)
Total length 1.20 mm. Wing length 0.69–0.70 mm. Total length/wing length 1.70. Wing length/profemur length 3.1–3.3.
Coloration. Head brown. Thorax yellowish brown, medially yellowish. Antenna and legs yellowish, abdomen yellowish brown.
Head. AR 0.47–0.56. Length of flagellomeres (in µm): 22–23, 25–28, 29–30, 30–32, 52–61. Ultimate flagellomere with 10–12 apical sensilla chaetica. Tentorium 104–105 µm long, 10–12 µm wide. Clypeus with 8–12 setae. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 14–15, 14–15, 17–23, 25–29, 41–50. Palpomere 5/3 ratio 2.2–2.4.
Thorax. Dorsocentrals 7, prealars 2. Scutellum with 2 setae.
Wing ( Fig. 11 G). Wing broader than in male. VR 2.4–2.6, two anal veins present, Cu 368–392 µm long, Cu/ wing length 0.53–0.57, C 340 µm long; C/wing length 0.49, wing width/wing length 0.41–0.43. Costa with 10–11 setae.
Legs. Fore trochanter with keel. Spurs of fore tibia 11–14 and 10 µm long, of mid tibia 10–12 and 14–15 µm long, of hind tibia 33–35 and 10–11 µm long. Width at apex of fore tibia 18–21 µm wide, of mid tibia 19 µm, of hind tibia (a) 35–37 µm. Width of hind tibia 1 / 3 from apex (d) 18–19 µm, elongation length (b) 25–28 µm, length of maximum thickening (c 1) 62–81 µm, total length of thickening (c 2) 90–104 µm, a/d 1.9, b/d 1.4–1.5, c 1 /d 3.3–4.5, c 2 /d 5.0–5.5. Apex of hind tibia expanded, with comb of 14–16 setae, with one slightly hooked spur (same as in male). Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 10.
Abdomen. Number of setae on tergites II–VIII as: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3–4, 2.
Genitalia ( Figs 12 B). Tergite IX with 5–6 long caudal setae. Cercus 32–33 µm long, 32 µm wide. Notum length 106–120 µm. Gonocoxite with 1 long seta. Coxosternapodeme with 6 transparent well developed serrated lateral lamellae on inner side and 6 smaller lanceolate sensilla on the margin of labia. Seminal capsule 72–81 µm long, neck 8–14 µm long, 6 µm wide.
Pupa (n = 1–3)
Total length 1.73–1.94, 1.89 mm. Exuviae yellowish including cephalothorax.
Cephalothorax. Frontal setae 24–28, 26 µm long. Median antepronotals 14–16 µm and 16–18 µm long. Lateral antepronotals not visible. Anterior precorneal seta (PcS 1) 14 µm long, PcS 2 21 µm long, PcS 3 21 µm long. PcS 1–3 almost in a line, PcS 1 30 µm from PcS 2, PcS 2 3 µm from PcS 3, PcS 1 33 µm from PcS 3, PcS 3 35 µm from thoracic horn. Anterior dorsocentral (Dc 1) not observed, Dc 2 14 µm long, Dc 3 10 µm long, Dc 4 20 µm long. Dc 2 located 67 µm from Dc 3, Dc 3 located 14 µm from Dc 4. Wing sheath with very week pearls.
Abdomen ( Figs 12 C). Shagreen and chaetotaxy as illustrated. Caudal hooklets on tergal conjunctives minute, almost absent. No taeniate L-setae on tergites I–II. Anal lobe 127–133, 130 µm long. Anal lobe fringe with 29–31 setae, 240–260 µm long. Anal macrosetae 182–202 µm long, median setae 61–80 µm long.
Larva (n = 2–3)
Coloration. Head yellowish. Antenna with all segments yellowish. Abdomen yellowish.
Head. Capsule length 304–320 µm, width 192–200 µm, unsculptured. Postmentum 258–264 µm long. SII obvious, arising from small tubercle, SI and SIII not visible. Premandible 32–44 µm long. Mentum as in Fig. 12 E. Mandibles 61–71 µm long. Antenna as in Fig. 12 D, AR 0.94–0.98. Lengths of flagellomeres I–IV (in µm): 348– 392, 168–172, 192–208, 3–4. Basal segment width 16–20 µm, length of blade at apex of basal segment 41–44 µm. Length of antenna/length of head 2.35–2.41.
Abdomen. Length of anal setae 280–320 µm. Procercus 11 µm long, 8–11 µm wide. Subbasal seta of posterior parapods split as in Fig. 12 F, 55–61 µm long. Posterior parapods 131–162 µm long.
Distribution. Previously this species has been recorded only from the Russian Far East.
Remarks. The male is nearly identical to the original description by Makarchenko et Makarchenko (2006) except the slightly smaller size. The female, pupa and larva previously were unknown.
