status

subsp. nov.

Glyphipterix miniata continentalis ssp. nov.

( Figs. 4 View FIGURES 1 − 5 , 17, 17 View FIGURES 14 − 17 a, 24)

Description. Adult ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 − 5 ) with wingspan 9.5− 10 mm. Head glossy fuscous. Antenna golden fuscous, except whitish on scape anteriorly. Labial palpus white, pointed, slightly coarse on ventral surface; apex fuscous ventroapically; median and terminal segments each with two oblique fuscous rings disconnected dorsally. Thorax and tegula fuscous. Legs pale fuscous, with whitish rings on each segment of tarsi. Forewing nearly rectangular, slightly dilated towards 7/10; costa almost straight; apex rounded; termen slightly notched below apex, then obliquely rounded. Forewing ground color dark fuscous, rather glossy, overlaid with brownish yellow on distal 1/3, apex blackish fuscous, markings white edged with dark fuscous; costa with six streaks on distal 3/5, almost evenly spaced, uniformly oblique outwards, each terminating in a distinct or indistinct silvery-metallic spot, except second streak with distal 2/5 silvery metallic; dorsum with a large falcate marking before middle, broad and straight to below fold, abruptly narrowed and extending horizontally as a line to near tip of first costal streak, ending in a silvery-metallic spot, ill-defined on outer margin, without dark edge; distal 1/3 of forewing with five sliverymetallic dots: four of those together with the metallic-silvery distal 2/5 of second costal streak forming a dice of five, fifth dot on notch below apex; cilia with basal half forming a fuscous band with darker tips, distal half grayish white, white on notch below apex, fuscous antero-apically. Hindwing lanceolate, fuscous, glossy; cilia grayish fuscous.

Variations: Specimens collected decades ago have a lighter coloration, which probably attributes to fading.

Male genitalia ( Figs. 17, 17 View FIGURES 14 − 17 a). Tegumen + vinculum triangular. Tuba analis prominent, setose ventrally. Vinculum heavily sclerotized, concave medially on posterior and anterior margins; saccus absent. Valva narrow, heavily sclerotized, sparsely haired dorsally; basal 2/3 nearly straight, distal 1/3 recurved inwards by almost 90°, with strong denticles along ventral margin distally. Aedeagus slender and long, with spines and setae on bifurcate apex; cornutus a narrow tube. Anellus with basal half weakly sclerotized; distal half heavily sclerotized, furcate as recurved arms surrounding aedeagus, with sharp inner edge; a patch of setae placed ventrally on bifurcated location. Seventh sternite heavily sclerotized, gradually narrowed towards posterior margin, produced into a median process that is slightly concave at middle, forming two small lateral lobes ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 14 − 17 a).

Female genitalia ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 24 − 25 ). Papilla analis elongate oval; intersegment membrane between eighth tergite twice longer than eighth tergite. Posterior apophysis slender; anterior apophysis thicker, furcate at basal 1/3, curved at middle. Eighth tergite sclerotized, triangular; lateral lobes rounded posteriorly, with sparse hairs. Seventh sternite sclerotized, forming a broad, free subcrescent fold, triangularly protruding postero-medially; antrum cone-shaped, with a small ostium on top. Ductus bursae slender, terminated by cestum. Corpus bursae elongate ovoid, denticulate entirely; cestum a spindle-shaped sclerite, placed on entrance of corpus bursae; ductus seminalis originating from corpus bursae posteriorly.

Diagnosis. This new subspecies belongs to the trigonodes -group. Specimens collected from mainland China extremely resemble G. miniata miniata Arita et Heppner, 1992 from Taiwan superficially and in the male genitalia. However, the tegumen is fused with tergite, forming an apparent dorsal structure having side panels like pleurites in G. miniata miniata , and the last sternite is evenly narrowed posteriorly without median process. Considering no significant differences in the male genitalia except for minor but distinct variations in the shape of the ventral and dorsal plates, we propose a subspecies of G. miniata .

Distribution. China (Chongqing, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong).

Etymology. The subspecific name is derived from the Latin “ continentalis ”, referring to the locality of this subspecies.

Notes. “LYQ” was added before the original slide number on the slide, indicating that the genitalia were dissected and mounted by the late prof. Youqiao Liu.
