Characterization. Head. Labrum mostly pale; black on dorsum of head limited; postocular lobes rounded ( Fig. 1p View FIGURE 1 ). Thorax. Pronotum anterior lobe ( Figs. 4p View FIGURE 4 ; 5p View FIGURE 5 ) smooth; anterior and middle lobes of pronotum separated dorso-laterally by a groove (g.); anterior area of propleuron with a sub-vertical crest extending from ventral margin to ventral end of anterior lobe lateral margin, and a short lateral crest parallel to it (l.c.); antero-dorsal margin of middle lobe of pronotum smooth; pronotum posterior lobe in male trilobed, with medial lobe decumbent, smoothly convex, bilobed, or bluntly pointed ( Figs. 4p i View FIGURE 4 –vii), in female bilobed, sinuous, or trilobed, with medial lobe directed dorsally or postero-dorsally ( Figs. 4p View FIGURE 4 viii–xi), lateral lobes of pronotum posterior lobe longer than 0.50 of medial lobe length; mesanepisternal horns adjacent at base, directed laterally along distal free half, as long as about two times mesostigmal plate width, of medium thickness to thin, with tips bluntly pointed ( Figs. 4p View FIGURE 4 ; 5p View FIGURE 5 ); mid-dorsal dark stripe as wide as about 0.33 of mesanepisterna, parallel sides to slightly widening posteriorly ( Fig. 3p View FIGURE 3 ); Pt squarish, with posterior side about equal to distal side, to short rectangular, with anterior and posterior sides slightly longer than distal side. Abdomen.—Male genital lobe short, less than 0.50 of anterior hamule height, smoothly curved; male posterior hamule digit-like and small, with at most only tip surpassing ventral margin of genital fossa in lateral view; curvature of basal segment of genital ligula marked by a slight concave depression; genital ligula distal segment sub-rectangular; apex of genital ligula distal segment transverse, with a narrow ectal fold (e.f., Fig. 8p View FIGURE 8 ); posterior margin of female S8 sternum smooth, lacking any denticles, spines, or processes ( Fig. 9o View FIGURE 9 ); distal end of ovipositor reaching apex of paraproct to slightly longer, but shorter than cercus; medial portion of male S10 postero-dorsal margin ( Figs. 10p View FIGURE 10 ; 11p View FIGURE 11 ; 12p View FIGURE 12 ) projected posteriorly, with a small medial longitudinal slit, with sides apressed and thickened forming curved dorsal prominence surrounding slit; male cercus in dorsal view ( Fig. 10p View FIGURE 10 ) about straight, narrowing to tip which has a bicuspidate disto-ventral ridge (r.), with outer apical tooth pointed and inner tooth rounded ( Figs. 10p View FIGURE 10 ; 11p View FIGURE 11 ); ratio of male cercus length to S10 maximum length in lateral view about 0.66; ratio of male cercus length to paraproct length in lateral view 0.47–0.50; male paraproct in lateral view ( Fig. 12p View FIGURE 12 ) with sides straight to slightly arched, medial section of uniform width, slightly widened at tip.
Dimensions. Males (n 10): Hw 22.8 ± 0.5 [22–23.7]; abdomen 39 ± 1 [37.7–40.5]; total length 46.6 ± 1.1 [45– 48.2]. Females (n 10): Hw 24.3 ± 0.8 [23.3–25.8]; abdomen 38.8 ± 1.2 [37–41.1]; total length 46.3 ± 1.4 [45–49.4].
Diagnosis. Metaleptobasis lillianae shares head dorsum with black pattern limited to isolated stripes, base of mesanepisternal horns adjacent, and presence of two sub-vertical crests on anterior portion of propleuron only with M. diceras , M. longicauda , M. silvicola , and M. truncata . In M. diceras and M. lillianae the anterior crest originates as a continuation of a longitudinal latero-ventral crest on propleuron extended dorsally and is separated from anterior margin of anterior lobe of pronotum, while in M. longicauda , M. silvicola , and M. truncata it originates as a ventral extension of anterior margin of anterior lobe of pronotum. Metaleptobasis lillianae differs from all of them by distal free portion of horns directed laterally ( Figs. 4p View FIGURE 4 ; 5p View FIGURE 5 ; vs. directed antero-dorsally or reduced, Figs. 4f View FIGURE 4 ; 5f, q View FIGURE 5 , aa, ad) and pterothoracic mid-dorsal stripe about as wide as 0.33 of mesepisterna ( Fig. 3p View FIGURE 3 ; vs. as wide as 0.14–0.25 of mesepisterna, Figs. 3f, q View FIGURE 3 , aa, ad). It can be further differentiated from M. diceras by genital ligula distal segment sub-rectangular in ventral view ( Fig. 8p View FIGURE 8 ; vs. pear-shaped, Fig. 8f View FIGURE 8 ) and male cercus about straight and narrowing to tip in dorsal view ( Fig. 10p View FIGURE 10 ; curved medially and slightly widened subapically in M. diceras , Fig. 8f View FIGURE 8 ), and from M. longicauda , M. silvicola , and M. truncata by anterior and middle lobes of pronotum separated dorso-laterally by a groove (g., Fig. 5p View FIGURE 5 ; vs. separated by a narrow fissure, f., Figs. 4q View FIGURE 4 , aa, ad; 5q, aa, ad). Metaleptobasis lillianae shares only with females of M. selysi and some heteromorphic females of M. bicornis the combination of mesanepisternal horns adjacent at base and with distal free portion directed laterally. It differs from them by the lateral margins of pronotum anterior lobe not projected postero-ventrally forming a ridge ( Fig. 5p View FIGURE 5 ; projected postero-ventrally forming a ridge in M. bicornis , Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 iv; 5b) and lateral portion of anterior lobe of pronotum not inflated ( Fig. 5p View FIGURE 5 ; inflated in M. selysi , in., Figs. 4z View FIGURE 4 ; 5z View FIGURE 5 ).
All females of M. lillianae share the shape and orientation of mesanepisternal horns with males and differ in the shape of hind lobe of pronotum, and both characters show a considerable degree of plasticity.
Habitat. Forest near rivers, small ponds, and pools.
Distribution. Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and SW Brazil ( Fig. 14d).
