Etymology. From Latin spatula (noun), referring to its spatulate mesanepisternal horns, compressed antero-posteriorly.

Specimens examined. Total: 4 ♂, 33 ♀.
Description of male holotype. Labium ivory, base of mandible and rear of head yellow; labrum yellow with brown forking lines and dark brown line along latero-basal margins; eyes pale greenish grey, color in life unknown; gena and anteclypeus pale blue, gena with a small dark brown spot lateral to antefrons, anteclypeus with a pair of large medio-lateral diffuse brown spots; postclypeus, antefrons, postfrons, and epicranium brown, with a dark brown stripe along anterior margin of postclypeus, and black areas as depicted in Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ab i; postocular lobes rounded. Thorax. Color as described for genus, with mid-dorsal dark stripe on pterothorax black with metallic green reflections, wider than inter-laminal sinus, as wide as 0.33 of mesanepisterna width, widest at anterior 0.20 and slightly and gradually narrowing to posterior end, extending along sides of antealar sinus ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ab i). Pronotum anterior lobe ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 ab i; 5ab i) smooth; anterior and middle lobes of pronotum separated dorso-laterally by a groove; anterior area of propleuron with a prominent triangular tubercle ventral to lateral margin of anterior lobe of pronotum; middle lobe of pronotum smooth; pronotum posterior lobe slightly trilobed, with medial lobe smoothly convex, and lateral lobes entire and smoothly convex, shorter than 0.50 of medial lobe, with lateral corners rounded, and posterior margin upright, directed dorso-posteriorly. Mesostigmal plate with apex tilted forward. Mesanepisternal horns with bases separated, as long as mesostigmal plate width, of medium thickness, compressed antero-posteriorly, parallel sided at base and diverging at tip, directed dorso-laterally at an angle of 30° with dorsum in lateral view, with rounded tips. Wings hyaline, veins reddish brown; Pt trapezoidal, with anterior side shorter than distal side, and membrane pale reddish brown margined by pale yellow; 15 pnx in Fw, 14 in Hw. Abdomen. Postmortem background color pale yellow on S1–10; S1 with a reddish brown dorso-posterior spot; dorsum of S2–7 reddish-brown, of S8–10 black, with a basal pale incomplete ring at anterior edge on S2–8 interrupted by dorso-longitudinal dark line, and with a small diffuse pale transverse spot near posterior margin on each side on S2–6, on S3–6 dark dorsal color posterior to pale transverse spot darker and extended ventrally along sides of lateral terga; sterna medio-longitudinal carina brown on S2–6 and black on S7–8; cercus reddish brown, with medial surface pale yellow at base and apex black; paraproct base and medial surface pale, remainder black. Genital lobe short, less than 0.50 of anterior hamule height, smoothly curved; posterior hamule digit-like and small, shortly surpassing ventral margin of genital fossa in lateral view; curvature of basal segment of genital ligula marked by a slight concave depression; genital ligula distal segment pear-shaped, with ratio maximum width/length of 0.55, with apex bifid with a v-shaped cleft, at rest surrounding sides of basal segment, lacking an ectal fold ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ab). Medial portion of S10 postero-dorsal margin ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 ab; 11ab; 12ab) projected posteriorly, lacking a medial incision, with a short medial prominence. Cercus in dorsal view ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ab) sub-cylindrical, gradually narrowing distally, slightly curved medially; tip curved medially at 90° in dorsal view, bluntly pointed ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 ab); ratio of cercus length to S10 maximum length in lateral view 1.1; ratio of cercus length to paraproct length in lateral view 0.75; paraproct with base sub-cylindrical, distal 0.66 compressed with an inner concavity, width uniform along distal half in lateral view ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 ab); tip narrowed ventrally and curved medially, bluntly pointed.
Dimensions. Hw 22.7; abdomen 38.1; total length 45.8.
Female paratype (collected at type locality). Head. As in holotype but background color of clypeus, frons, and gena pale greenish yellow ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ab vi).— Thorax. As in holotype ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 ab ii; 4ab iii; 5ab v) but mesanepisternal horns directed dorso-laterally at an angle of 45° with dorsum in lateral view; Pt pale brown margined with pale yellow.— Abdomen. Color pattern as in holotype but medio-longitudinal carina black on sterna S2–8; dark areas of dorsum reddish brown, with black limited to medio-longitudinal area on basal half of S9 and dorsum of S10; posterior margin of S8 sternum smooth, lacking any denticles, spines, or processes ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 aa); external valve of ovipositor yellow along basal 0.50, dark reddish brown along distal half, stylus brown; ovipositor surpassing slightly level of tip of cercus; caudal appendages dark reddish brown.
Variation in paratypes. Head. As in holotype but extension of black areas on epicranium more or less extensive ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ab); female eyes in life greenish yellow ( Fig. 13l View FIGURE 13 ).— Thorax. As in holotype but in male paratypes mesanepisternal horns at an angle of 30°–45° with dorsum, in heteromorphic females pronotum posterior lobe ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 ab iv–x) entire, sinuous, or trilobed with medial lobe smoothly convex to slightly bilobed, lateral lobes only slightly shorter than medial lobe, mesostigmal plate with apex only slightly tilted forward, mesanepisternal horns diverging to parallel to slightly converging, directed dorso-laterally at an angle of 30°– 45° with dorsum and as long as 0.50–0.66 of mesostigmal plate width to vestigial, represented by low rounded tubercles ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ab iii); mid-dorsal dark stripe as in holotype to parallel sided; 13–16 pnx in Fw, 12–15 in Hw; Pt as in holotype to pale yellow to reddish brown.— Abdomen. As in holotype but postmortem background color pale greenish yellow to pale yellow to yellow; dorsum of S2–10 pale brown to reddish-brown to dark reddish-brown ( Fig. 13l View FIGURE 13 ); ovipositor reaching level of tip of paraproct to slightly surpassing cercus tip; cercus reddish brown to black; female epiproct and paraproct yellow to pale brown to reddish brown to black.
Dimensions. Males (n 4, including holotype): Hw 24 ± 1 [22.7–25.1]; abdomen 39.6 ± 1.7 [38.1–42]; total length 47.6 ± 2 [45.8–50.4]. Females (n 10): Hw 27.3 ± 1.4 [25.3–29.4]; abdomen 41.8 ± 1.7 [39.5–43.9]; total length 50.7 ± 2.1 [47.6–53.5].
Diagnosis. Among the species with a small digit-like male posterior hamule, smooth female posterior margin of S8 sternum lacking any denticles, spines, or processes, and dorsum of head with black color extensive covering about half to almost all of dorsal surface, M. spatulata is unique by presenting the combination of characters including labrum mostly pale, antero-dorsal margin of middle lobe of pronotum smooth, not forming a crest, and anterior area of propleuron with a prominent triangular tubercle. The triangular tubercle (t.) is shared only with M. turbinata ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 ab, ae). However, in M. spatulata anterior margin of middle-lobe of pronotum is smooth ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 ab; 5ab; forming a crest in M. turbinata , cr., Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 ae; 5ae) and distal segment of male genital ligula is pear-shaped with apex deeply cleft ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ab; sub-rectangular with long coiled latero-apical flagella in M. turbinata , Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ae).
The only andromorphic female examined shares both posterior lobe of pronotum, with very short lateral lobes, and mesanepisternal horn morphology, longer with distal portion directed antero-laterally with males, whereas heteromorphic females present longer lateral lobes on posterior lobe of pronotum and mesanepisternal horns shorter and missing the distal antero-lateral projection or reduced to blunt tubercles.
Remarks. Metaleptobasis spatulata shows some variability in the extension of the black areas on dorsum of head. Since the extremes of variability are displayed by specimens from the same area (Chapajilla in Huánuco Dep.) which otherwise do not differ in any structural characters, I consider this to be part of the intraspecific variability in this species. The only known males of this species are from Huánuco Dep. in Peru, collected together with the only andromorphic female I examined. The 32 heteromorphic females, found at numerous localities in Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru including Huánuco, differ from males by posterior lobe of pronotum with longer lateral lobes, mesostigmal plate tilted forward only slightly, and mesanepisternal horns shorter, extended laterally for a shorter distance or reduced to blunt tubercles. This matches the dimorphism or polymorphism and plasticity in the shape of these structures known to occur in other congeneric species (i.e. M. bicornis , M. brysonima , M. mauffrayi , M. quadricornis ), and as they share the prominent triangular tubercle ventral to lateral margin of anterior lobe of pronotum on anterior portion of propleuron, lateral lobes of posterior lobe of pronotum with posterior margin bent upwards, location and shape of mesanepisternal horns, general color pattern, and size, I consider them to be conspecific.
Habitat. Forest trails, bamboo thickets, terra firme forest, forest canopy, forest near rivers, seeps, and swamps.
Distribution. Ecuador, Peru, and W Brazil ( Fig. 14a).
