Genus Dorisiana Metcalf, 1952 View in CoL View at ENA

Dorisia Delétang 1919: 83 View in CoL .

Dorisiana Metcalf 1952 View in CoL nom. nov. pro Dorisia Delétang, 1919 View in CoL nec Dorisia M̂schler, 1883 View in CoL : 351.

Type species. Cicada semilata Walker 1850: 122 View in CoL . (St. Lucia, Antilles and Cayenne, French Guiana)

Remarks. The genus was introduced in a taxonomic key ( Delétang 1919) that led to a history of problems in how the taxon was applied. To amplify the problems, neither Metcalf (1952) when a replacement name was provided for the preoccupied Dorisia nor Boulard & Martinelli (1996) when they separated Dorisana and Guyalna by two characters in the taxonomic key where Guyalna was introduced provided a full description of the genus. The lack of a full generic description has meant multiple species have been assigned to incorrect genera or species were reassigned to different genera only to be reassigned to Dorisiana in the future. The only structure used by Delétang (1919) to distinguish his genus was a cruciform elevation notched in the form of a more or less open semicircle, unfortunately a character state found in many Fidicinini . Boulard & Martinelli (1996) used a tapered, triangular timbal cover as the characteristic to distinguish Dorisiana in their key. Species of Dorisiana are most similar to species of Guyalna but can be distinguished by a head not as wide or wider than mesonotum, eyes not extending beyond pronotal lateral edges, triangular timbal covers, ventral timbal cover margin angled dorsally and not parallel to long body axis, and lateral uncus lobe not extending to the same length as they do in the species of Guyalna ( Sanborn 2016a) .

Distribution. The genus has been reported over much of the New World with examples being recorded from the Antilles, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Boulard & Martinelli 2011; Sanborn 2011a, b; 2013; 2014a; 2016b; 2018b; 2019b; 2020c, d, e; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
