Diagnosis. Rhopobota quadrata is superficially similar to R. bicolor Kawabe , but it can be separated by the uncus being nearly square, and the cucullus straight ventrally, with stout setae dorsally. In R. bicolor the uncus is long with a dilated, rounded hammer-shaped termination, and the cucullus is prominent ventrally and armed with thick setae dorsally and ventrally.
Description. Adult ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Head: Vertex with erect gray scales, frons white. Antenna with scape and pedice gray and flagellum light brown. Labial palpus with outer side grayish brown, inner side gray, second segment with long scales at ventro-apical margin, terminal segment porrect. Thorax: Dorsum gray; tegulae with basal half brown and apical half gray. Prothoracic leg brown; mesothoracic leg gray, with tibiae and tarsi brown; metathoracic leg gray, with brown scales on tarsus. Forewing length 7.0 mm. Forewing with upperside bicolored, with a dark brown line from apex to near middle of dorsum, anterior part gray mixed with brown, posterior part pale gray, apex darker and protuberant; termen concave below apex; costa with seven pairs of strigulae, the first two pairs between base and intersection of Sc and costa, other five pairs between Sc and R4, distal pair of strigulae composed of only one short stria; other patches and fasciae inconspicuous; cilia gray mixed with brown. Hindwing and cilia gray. Abdomen: Male genitalia ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ) with uncus arms nearly quadrate; socius long, top large, clavate, setose. Valva broad at base, straight ventrally; sacculus with a small pointed sclerotized process directed dorsad on disto-ventral edge of basal opening; cucullus slightly dilated, rounded apically, setose, straight ventrally, with stout setae dorsally. Phallus short and broad; cornuti numerous, deciduous. Female unknown.
Holotype. ♂, CHINA: Yunnan Province: Xishuangbanna, Wild Elephant Valley (22.17°N, 100.87°E), 762 m, 20.vii.2014, K. Teng, W. Guan, X. Wang & S. Liu, genitalia slide no. ZAH15033. Distribution. This species is known only from Yunnan, China. GoogleMaps
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin quadratus = quadrate, referring to the shape of the uncus.
