This small genus was described by J.E. Smith (1811) for an Asian species of Potentilla that has strawberry-like false fruits. It is superficially similar to species of Fragaria but has yellow flowers and shares several other characteristics with species in the Reptans clade of Potentilla ( Wolf, 1908) . Some authors have joined these species to Fragaria ( Andrews, 1807; Mabberley, 2002), but Duchesnea is more frequently kept separate in flora treatments and classifications such as Flora of China ( Lu & al., 2003), Flora of North America ( Ertter & Reveal, 2014), Flora Europaea ( Valentine & Chater, 1968), and in Kechaykin & Shmakov (2016). The type, Duchesnea indica (Andrews) Teschem. (basionym Fragaria indica Andrews ), has been shown to be a close relative of the type of Potentilla ( P. reptans ), and belongs to the Reptans clade ( Eriksson & al., 1998).
