Fabricius (1759) cited a pre-Linnaean source ( Ray, 1690) for “ Fragaria sterilis ” on which he based his genus. Ray in turn cited earlier works, including an image of the species ( Bauhin, 1623; Bauhin & al., 1651). In his second edition, Fabricius (1763) copied the phrase name from Bauhin & al. (1651) as the only species name. Fabricius attributed the name Fragariastrum to Heister (1748), and there was no reference to Linnaeus (1753), such as the one he had under Fragaria . Linnaeus, however, partly cites the same sources for Fragaria sterilis L. ( Linnaeus, 1753), and there is no doubt that the genus was based on what is now classified as Potentilla sterilis (L.) Garcke. Later authors such as Schur (1853, 1866) have used Fragariastrum and recombined a number of Potentilla species from the Alba clade to it. Panigrahi & Dikshit (1986) designated Fragariastrum sterile (L.) Schur as type – a species found in the Alba clade.
