Fraga Lapeyr., Hist. Pl. Pyrénées : 287. 1813 – Type (desig-
nated here): Fraga sterilis (L.) Lapeyr. (≡ Fragaria ste-
rilis L.).
Two species were listed by Lapeyrouse (1813) in Fraga : F. sterilis and F. vaillantii . Under F. sterilis , he references F. sterilis L. ( Linnaeus, 1762). The second listed species, F. vaillantii (Vill.) Lapeyr. , has Potentilla fragarioides Vill. as a synonym. Villars (1789) also cited Fragaria sterilis in his description of Potentilla fragarioides , which was therefore illegitimate as he ought to have adopted the ‘ sterilis ’ epithet. Until now Fraga has had no type, and there is only one available choice. Fraga sterilis belongs to the Alba clade.
