On the basis of having only five stamens and thus not fitting within the Class Icosandria Polygynia, where Linnaeus (1753) put his genus Potentilla, Opiz (1857) erected the genus Potentillopsis for a single species. He cited Potentilla pentandra Engelmann as the basis for his genus (although using another epithet, making his species name illegitimate). The type is Potentilla pentandra (basionym), which is now considered to be a synonym of P. rivalis Nutt. ( Watson, 1873; Ertter & al., 2014) and Potentillopsis belongs to the Argentea clade.
