Pentaphylloides Duhamel 1755 , nom. illeg.
Duhamel de Monceau (1755) cited “ Potentilla Linn. ” as a synonym to Pentaphylloides . However, Dandy (1967) commenting on Duhamel’ s work, writes “the citation of a Linnaean name in synonymy does not always indicate substitution, ‘pro parte’ being sometimes implied, as can be seen by study of the generic description and the species listed”. Although Duhamel in this case only included a single species (that we now know is nested in Fragariinae), his generic description explicitly includes also those with pentafoliolate digitate leaves. Thus, Pentaphylloides is a superfluous and illegitimate genus name.
