Coleonyx Gray

The genus Coleonyx includes seven species of terrestrial geckos commonly referred to as banded geckos. These species are found throughout the south-western United States of America and northern Mexico south into Central America to Costa Rica ( Klauber 1945).

Phylogenetic relationships for four species within the genus were assessed by Jonniaux and Kumazawa (2008). Among Eublepharidae the karyotype is known for 4 species only: C. switaki (2n = 24; FN = 26) ( Murphy 1974), C. variegatus (2n = 32; FN = 32) ( Matthey 1933; Porter et al. 1994), Eublepharis macularius (2n = 38; FN = 38) ( Gorman 1973), and Goniurosaurus kuroiwae (2n = 24) ( Ota et al. 1987).
