Type material examined. Holotype, ♀ of Stypommisa (Styphocera) antennina PERU, Huánuco, Department Huánuco, deposited in the Cornell University Insect Collection ( CUIC) No. 6747 ( CUIC 000058931 View Materials ), labeled as follows: “Huanuco, PERU, 17 Sept. 1954, 7,500 ft” [white label with handwritten data]; “Holotype” “ Stypommisa (Styphocera) antennina ” n.sp., Det. C.B. Philip 69 [red label with handwritten data] ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ). The holotype is partly damaged. The head is detached, both basal flagellomeres are lost, and the one remaining wing is partially destroyed. The anterior legs are missing, and some of the legs lack tarsal segments.
Redescription (Holotype ♀)
Diagnosis. Length 8.0 mm, wing length 8.5 mm. Body color dark brown. Eyes dark brown, with long, sparse ommatrichia. Frons moderately wide and divergent towards subcallus; frontal index 1.7. Basal callus dark brown, triangular with median dorsal projection reaching half the height of the frons. Ocellar triangle and ocelli vestigial. Scape of antenna subcylindrical, 2.5 times the length of pedicel; basal flagellomere indistinctly triannulated. Palpus slightly tapering distally and widening proximally, three-quarters the length of the proboscis. Mesonotum with dark brown integument, bearing sparse medium dark brown setulae. Wings slightly smoky, with dark brown clouds on the crossveins. Abdomen dark brown dorsally, distal margin of tergites lighter, sternites lighter yet.
Head. Eyes dark brown with long, sparse ommatrichia. Frons moderately wide and divergent towards subcallus, with brownish pruinescence and with long brownish setulae ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ); frontal index 1.7. Vertex with brownish pruinescence and long black setulae. Basal callus dark brown, triangular, with median dorsal projection reaching half the height of frons, touching subcallus but not touching eyes ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ). Ocellar triangle and ocelli vestigial. Subcallus covered with brownish pruinescence, without setulae. Gena with brown pruinescence and with long brownish setulae. Clypeus with grayish pruinescence and with long brownish setulae, medially without setulae. Scape of antenna subcylindrical, 3.0 times length of pedicel, reddish brown, with long erect black setulae. Pedicel short, concolorous, bearing short black setulae, without dorsal projection ( Fig. 1C View FIGURE 1 ). Basal flagellomere “robust not excised dorsally, style chunky and indistinctly 3-annulated.” Palpus with brownish pruinescence, with long black and grayish setulae, setulae longer on first segment than on second segment; first segment dark brown, one-quarter length of second segment; second segment lighter in color, slightly tapering distally and widening proximally, three-quarters length of proboscis, inner side without setulae ( Fig. 1C View FIGURE 1 ). Proboscis with dark brownish-black setulae, labellum large and fleshy ( Fig. 1C View FIGURE 1 ).
Thorax. Scutum with dark brown integument, bearing sparse long dark brown setulae; postpronotal lobes light brown with long blackish setulae. Scutellum with long setulae laterally, disc with shorter setulae ( Fig. 1D View FIGURE 1 ). Pleura covered with dark brown pruinescence, with long light brown setulae; anepisternum with long dark brown setulae; katepisternum and katatergite with long light brown setulae ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ). Legs light brown, coxae darker, tibiae reddish brown, femora and tibiae with abundant long black setulae; remaining leg segments with short black setulae. Wing (partially destroyed). Wing membrane slightly infumated, with dark brown clouds on crossveins, cell r 5 widely open; veins Sc and R 1 with abundant short black setulae along their entire length; vein R 4 with short appendix ( Fig. 1F View FIGURE 1 ). Basicosta with short black setae. Halter dark brown. Squamae concolorous with wing base. Upper calypter light brown, lower calypter lighter in color. Abdomen. Dark brown dorsally, distal margin of tergites lighter, tergites 2–7 with light brown setulae, longer setulae laterally. Sternites pale brown with long light brown setulae ( Fig. 1F View FIGURE 1 ).
