Temnopis nigripes Aurivillius, 1893 View in CoL
( Figures 49–53 View Figures 49–56 )
Temnopis nigripes Aurivillius, 1893: 179 View in CoL ; 1912: 29 (cat.); Melzer 1920: 424 (distr.); 1931: 51; Blackwelder 1946: 203 (checklist); Martins et al. 1966: 203; Zajciw 1974: 43 (distr.); Monné 1993: 12 (cat.); Monné and Giesbert 1994: 29 (checklist); Monné 2001: 34 (cat. hosts); Monné 2005: 422 (cat.); 2021: 637 (cat.).
Remarks. According to Martins (1978b: 131) on Temnopis nigripes Aurivillius, 1893 (translated):
The holotype male (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet), now examined, specimen whose procedence indicates only ′ Brasil, F . Sahlb.̍, is considerably larger than the 35 specimens that I identified, with some doubt, as belong to the species [ Temnopis nigripes ]. In addition to the absence of narrowing at the apex of the antennomere V of the holotype, I could not find other differences to separate it from the other specimens.
Still according to Martins (1978b), the antennae are basally black in most specimens, which do not occur in the specimens deposited in the MZSP collection. Martins (1997: 84) reported on the type of T. nigripes (translated):
I examined and measured the holotype in 1978, and received it for study from the NRMS [ Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet , Stockholm, Sweden] . According to the description, the holotype should belong to the Sahlberg collection, currently at UZMH [Finish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland] .
Also, Martins (1977: 69) wrote, on Sphagoeme sahlbergi (translated): ′According to Horn and Kahle (1936, p. 236), Sahlberg collection (especially South American specimens), are currently at the Museum of Helsinki̍. However, we received confirmation from Jaakko Mattila (MZHF) that there are no types of species described by Aurivillius in this museum. The holotype ( Figures 49–53 View Figures 49–56 ) is now deposited at NHRS. We compared the holotype photographs with the other species of Temnopis . However, no species of the genus seems to correspond to this species. Therefore, the holotype remains the only formally known specimen of T. nigripes .
