Rhynchospora longisetis Brown (1810:230) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated by Dey & Prassana,2012:48):30):— AUSTRALIA.
Nova Hollandia: s.d., Banks s.n. (BM [000901440] photo!).
Rhynchospora massieana Camus (1910: 249) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— LAOS, 1895, Massie s.n. (P [00076726] photo!). Remaining syntypes:—Cochinchine: Pierre (L [0042708] photo!, P [00076727] photo!, P [00076728] photo!).
In the protologue of Rhynchospora massieana, Camus (1910) View in CoL cites collections by Pierre, from Cochinchine, and by Massie, from Laos (syntypes), but the holotype was not specified, so a lectotypification is proposed (Art. 9.3). We found sheets of the collection of Pierre in the L and P herbaria, and of Massie in the P herbarium. The sheet P00076726 of Massie deposited in the herbarium P is chosen as lectotype here because it bears the most complete material, and presents an annotation slip with the author’s determination.
Rhynchospora mexicana (Liebmann) Steudel (1855: 144) View in CoL .— Haplostylis mexicana Liebmann (1850: 249) View in CoL . First-step lectotype: (Designated by Koyama). Second-step lectotype (designated here):— MEXICO: West side of Mexico, in savannas between La Galera and Pochutla (Dep. Oajaca), ca. 1000' alt., flowering in October 1842, Liebmann s.n. (C [10010585 p. p., excl. loose fragments of Poaceae View in CoL indet.] photo! [ Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 , 7 View FIGURE 7 ]; isolectotypes: C [10010583 p. p., excl. loose fragments of Poaceae View in CoL indet.] photo!, C [10010584 p. p., excl. loose fragments of Poaceae View in CoL indet.] photo!, K [000632408] photo!, P [00267535] photo!).
In the protologue of Haplostylis mexicana, Liebman (1855) View in CoL cited a collection from the savanna at “La Galera og Pochutla (Dep. Oajaca)”, October. The Liebman types are deposited in the C herbarium, and the duplicates were sent to several herbaria (Sayre, 1975). Four sheets were found in C, K, and P herbaria. Koyama (1972) inadvertently lectotypified a sheet deposited in C when cited “Type. Liebmann s n (C), from savanna between La Galera and Potchutla, Dept. Oaxaca, Mexico " (Art. 7.11). Considering that there are three syntypes (Art. 40) at C, a second step lectotypification is proposed (Art. 9.17). The sheets deposited in C are mixed gatherings, containing fragments of an unidentified Poaceae View in CoL . The sheet C10010585 is being chosen as the lectotype here because it bears the most complete material, has a description with Liebmann’s handwriting and an illustration of the nutlets probably also made by the author. The sheets C10010583, C10010584, K000632408, and P00267535 are treated as isolectotypes.
Rhynchospora rubra (Loureiro) Makino (1903: 180) View in CoL .— Schoenus ruber Loureiro (1790: 41) View in CoL . Rhynchospora rubra subsp. senegalensis Raynal (1967: 323) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— SENEGAL. “Planitie arenosa temporaliter inundata vulgo dicta prope urbem Fatick ”, 27 October 1961, J. & A. Raynal 7742 (P [01734517] photo!; isolectotype: P [00461862] photo!).
Raynal (1967) designated as the holotype of the subspecies his own collection (Raynal no. 7742), deposited in the P herbarium. However, there are two sheets of this collection in the P herbarium, so a lectotypification is proposed. The sheet P01734517 is being selected here as the lectotype, because it bears the most complete material. The sheet P00461862 is treated here as an isolectotype.
Rhynchospora subimberbis Grisebach (1866: 245) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— CUBA “occ.”: 1863, Wright 3402 (GOET [006348] photo! [ Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ]; isolectotypes: G [00034403] photo!, GOET [006349 p. p., excl. fragment of Rhynchospora globosa (Kunth) Roem. & Schult. View in CoL ] photo!, K [000632388] photo!, MA [607230] photo!, NY [01298403]!, NY [01298399]!, P [00585001] photo!, P [00585002] photo!, S [13-18668] photo!, S [13-18669] photo!, UC [937028] photo!, US [00087044]!, YU [001022] photo!).
Grisebach (1866) cited in the protologue of Rhynchospora subimberbis View in CoL a collection of Charles Wright no. 3402, but no herbarium was specified. His duplicates from Cuba were mainly at B (destroyed), but also in several other herbaria ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973). Sheets of this collection were found in many herbaria (K, G, GOET, P, S, UC, US, and YU), which up to now are syntypes (Art. 9.6), so a lectotype is designated here (Art. 9.3). The sheet GOET006348 is being accepted as the lectotype because it gives more stability to the name since has no admixture, has an annotation slip with Wright’s handwriting, and bears the best material, so the others are treated as isolectotypes.
Rhynchospora submarginata Kükenthal (1949: 498) View in CoL .— Rhynchospora marginata Clarke (1908: 89) View in CoL , nom. illeg. Lectotype (designated here):— R. Brown s.n. (K [001057250] photo! [ Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ], isolectotypes: K [001057249] photo!, BM [000901435] photo!, MEL [2297565] photo!, BRI [0341414] photo!, DNA [0040468] photo!, E [00207684] photo!). Remaining syntype:—North Coast, R. Brown n. 5993 (B [100030578] photo!). Rhynchospora submarginata var. tonkinensis Kükenthal (1949: 499) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):—" Tonkin, Prov. Thoi Nyma: in der
Umgebung von Phu da Phue”, 4 October 1926, A. Pételot n. 6.103 [in the protologue as 103, typographical error] (P [00076905]
photo!; isolectotype: B, fragment [100030577] photo!).
Clarke (1908) cited in the protologue two collections of Rhynchospora marginata made by Robert Brown, from Australia (R. Brown s.n., and R. Brown no. 5993), which up to now were syntypes (Art. 9.4). Robert Brown’s collections were sent mainly to BM, K, and E, with additional material sent to many herbaria, including MEL ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973). The sheet deposited at MEL is a duplicate from the Queensland Herbarium Brisbane Botanic Gardens (BRI), from the type collections of S.T. Blake, according to the annotation slip. Stanley Thatcher Blake collected mainly Cyperaceae and Grasses in Queensland and deposited his types in BRI ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973). He probably received collections of Robert Brown and deposited them at BRI and B, so the sheet deposited at BRI probably belongs to this collection. Searching these herbarium databases, seven sheets of these collections were found. Kükenthal (1949), when proposing the new name, cited only R. Brown no. 5993 p. p., which cannot be considered as an inadvertent lectotypification, because the author did not include the term “type” or an equivalent (Art. 7.11). The specimen of R. Brown deposited in K (K001057249) was probably a mixed gathering, and the collection number 5993 referred to a Rhynchospora longisetis specimen, as can be seen on one of the attached annotation slips. The collection of R. Brown s.n. (K001057250) is being designated as the lectotype here, because it gives more stability to the name since it has no admixture, is not linked to the number 5993, which can be confusing, bears the most complete material, and has an annotation slip with Clarke’s handwriting.
Kükenthal (1949) cited in the protologue of Rhynchospora submarginata var. tonkinensis the collection of A. Pételot, no. 103, but no herbarium was specified. Pételot was a French botanist, who deposited his collections in P, and sent duplicates to B ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973). Searching on the P herbarium database, only the collection of Pételot no. 6103 was found, and there is a fragment of this collection deposited in B. It is probably a mistake in the protologue that cited Pételot no. 103 as the type, that here is corrected to Pételot no. 6.103 (Art. 9.2). So here the sheet P00076905 is being cited with the correct collection number, and is being chosen as the lectotype, because it bears the most complete material.
Rhynchospora subtenuifolia Kükenthal (1949: 499) View in CoL .— Rhynchospora tenuifolia Bentham (1878: 350) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— AUSTRALIA. Queensland: Rockingham Bay , 24 April 1866, Dallachy s.n. (MEL [2297571] photo! [ Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ]; isolectotype: BRI [0341415] photo!, BRI [0223253] photo!, MEL [2297568] photo!, MEL [2297569] photo!, MEL [2297570] photo!, BR [0000013462376] photo!, K [001057252] photo!, P [00585039] photo!. Remaining syntype:—: [North] Australia, Victoria River, 1867, Elsey s.n. (K [001057251] photo!).
Kükenthal (1949) proposed a new name as an explicit substitute for Rhynchospora tenuifolia Benth. View in CoL , since this name was a later homonym of R. tenuifolia Griseb. (1866) View in CoL . In the protologue of R. tenuifolia Benth. (1878) View in CoL two collections were cited, one from Australia, Northern Terr. (Elsey’s collection), and the other from Queensland, NE Australia (Dallachy’s collection). When publishing the new name, Kükenthal cited the collections of Dallachy, Elsey, and others (Jaheri no. 485, and S.T. Blake no. 13679), but did not designate a lectotype, leaving the collections cited by Bentham as syntypes (Art. 9.6). John Dallachy deposited his collections at MEL herbarium, with duplicates at B, BM, KIEL and W. The sheet deposited in BRI is from the S.T. Blake’s herbarium, who worked on resolving ambiguities in some locality names of Dallachy’s collections. The sheet at BRI was sent from MEL, according to the annotation slip. Mueller travelled with Dallachy, the botanic garden’s superintendent in 1853, and deposited his collections in MEL, BM, K, P, and W; the sheet at K is probably from this set. The sheet of Dallachy’s collection deposited in MEL (MEL2297571) is being chosen as the lectotype, since it is where Dallachy deposited his collections. The gathering has Dallachy’s handwriting on an annotation slip, and it bears the most complete material. The remaining Dallachy collections are isolectotypes.
Rhynchospora wightiana (Nees) Steudel (1855: 148) View in CoL .— Haplostylis wightiana Nees (1841: 49) . Lectotype (designated here):—Quilon, Wight 2911, December 1835 (K [001057260] photo! [ Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 ]). Remaining syntypes:—: “Peninsula Indiae orientalis", Wight 1903 (K [001057261] photo!, K [001057259] photo!, G [00034413] photo!), “Peninsula Indiae orientalis: Cananore”, Campbell s.n. (E [00179444] photo!, G [00034412] photo!). Rhynchospora discolor Hochstetter ex Steudel (1855: 148) View in CoL . Type (lectotype, designated here):—”Terr. Canara., Prope urbem Mangalor.,

Nees (1841) cited two collections in the protologue of Haplostylis wightiana , one of Campbell, and one of Wight. The herbarium of Wight and its types are deposited at K, and other materials are at G ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973). Three sheets were found in K herbarium, two of Wight, number 1903, and 2911, from his own herbarium, with the notation “Peninsula Ind. orientalis” on the annotation slip, and one with the notation “Cananore”. There is also a sheet of Wight no. 1903 in G herbarium, and a collection made by Campbell s.n., from his own herbarium. The sheet K001057260 of Wight no. 2911 is being chosen as the lectotype here because it bears the most complete material and is from Wight’s herbarium. The sheet K001057261 is treated as an isolectotype. and the sheets E00179444, and G00034412 collected by Campbell are treated here as remaining syntypes.
In the protologue of Rhynchospora discolor, Steudel (1855) cited a collection of the Hrbr. Ind. Hohenackeri no. 827. This is probably a collection of Rudolf Friedrich Hohenacker, whose collections were distributed to many herbaria after his death (e.g. B, BM, G, GOET, HAL, L, M, NY, UPS, and W). Many sheets of Hohenacker no. 827 were deposited in several herbaria (CORD, F, G, HAL, KFTA, JE, L, NY, P, and S). The sheet G00191929, deposited in G, is being accepted as the lectotype here because it is one of the collections into which Hohenacker’s herbarium was incorporated ( Stafleu & Cowan, 1973), and is the most complete material available.
