Remarks. Based on Chevrolat’ s description, D. fuscicornis is not any of the Puerto Rican Diastolinus , and fits better with Blapstinus . We looked for the type in the BMNH, MNHN, and MHNL, and did not find it. It is likely the type will be found in the Gundlach collection in the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática (IES) in La Habana, since Chevrolat mentioned it as the source. Gundlach (1894), in his faunal treatment of Puerto Rico, listed this species as follows:
Blapstinus scutellaris, Chevr. mss. olim.
Diastolinus fusciornis Chevr., Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 18, p. viii.
Diastolinus fuscescens , — (probablemente nombre mss.)
The nomen nudum Blapstinus scutellaris Chevrolat under Diastolinus fuscicornis Chevrolat fits a specimen that Garrido and Gutiérrez (1996a) mention as Gundlach specimen #l076 in the IES, Havana. They report it having the labels “ Blapstinus scutellaris , Diastolinus fuscicornis Chevrolat , Blapstinus scutellaris Chevrolat , recibido por Poey”. Although Garrido and Gutiérrez clearly think this specimen is from Cuba, it seems possible this is the Chevrolat type from Puerto Rico. We were unable to further study this specimen. After carefully comparing the description with all known Puerto Rican species, D fuscicornis seems to belong rather clearly to B. punctatus . The Marcuzzi records are simply repeating the Chevrolat record. Later, Garrido (2002) used the name D. fuscicornis for what we consider to be Diastolinus clavatus , a species that cannot be the one Chevrolat described, and that record is removed to D. clavatus .
The Puerto Rican records under the name B. striatulatus date to Wolcott (1936) , who followed Chapin’ s determination of a series of specimens sent to the USNM. These five specimens are in the collection there, under the name “ Blapstinus striatulatus Mels, C. ” The label reads “ Isabela,; 20 VI 1931 / Porto Rico; G. N. Wolcott .” Also in this series are two specimens labeled “St. Croix; Danish W.I./ Dr. L. Smith; collector.” One of the St. Croix specimens actually bears the Chapin identification label .
